How I Would Write Jason in TOA?

Sorry if any of this feels disjointed. This is my first time doing a character and plot rewrite.

I think Jason had loads of potential to be a great character, but it was messed up in TBM.

To add on to the post, I’ll explain what I would change. 

Jason and Piper are together in TBM, but there would be dialogue explaining how it was tough “starting over” their relationship(like Blood of Olympus very much hinted) and that they had to do individual soul searching before building a better foundation for their relationship. Piper would have doubts about their relationship and still question if Aphrodite and Hera’s interference is why they are together.

Piper’s father would still lose his money but earlier, so Piper would move back to Oklahoma. Jason would go back and forth between Camp Half-Blood, building plans for the shrines. They still communicate except as friends. This would give them time to individuate and learn more about themselves(they would be broken up). Piper would realize her bisexuality and become attracted to Shel. They date, but it only last for a few months because Piper still has feelings for Jason. Her doubts of the relationship are resolved; however, she waits so she doesn’t pressure Jason. Speaking of Jason, after working for months on the shrines, he wishes to take a break and start acting/doing things for himself(hang out with friends, relaxing, etc). Jason’s feelings for Piper are still the same and, after a while, he talks to her about it. They get back together with Jason going to Oklahoma to be closer to Piper and try living a regular life. This could be good representation on how relationships take a lot of work and time, but can be worth it when there is love and communication. 

By the time The Burning Maze starts, Jason and Piper have been together for a month and are a stronger team. However, Jason is having trouble adjusting to having a normal because of his sense of responsibility to be a leader and protector. Between the couple getting together and TBM, they find another entrance to the Labyrinth and Jason learns about the prophecy. Safe to say, he is really stressed.

Instead of the prophecy saying that either Jason or Piper would die, I would change it to either one having to make a great sacrifice. Jason would still fight Caligula. It would be monumental for Jason’s character, and a big fight. Jason would lose, though he would escape with the group with grievous injuries and would be out of commission for the rest of the book. These injuries would result in Jason being paralyzed from the waist down, sacrificing a big part of his identity- being a strong fighter, something he is mostly known for. Jason would have to learn to adjust to the change and further learn more about himself. Though, thanks to Leo’s skills and a battle-ready wheelchair, Jason can still fight, he decides to mostly stay in the sidelines and be a tactician.

Jason Grace Deserved Better

Like most fans, I at first didn’t like Jason too much. Compared to most of the main characters, Jason seemed pretty bland. However, after rereading the books and analyzing Jason’s character, I realized how interesting he is. All his life, Jason has always been the “golden boy” leader type without really exploring himself. After the HOO series though, Jason started exploring more of himself beyond people’s expectations. When I learned about him appearing in the TOA series, I was expecting more exploration and growth for Jason, but it was ignored and he was killed off. This made me very upset.

Jason had a mission to commemorate every god (Greek or Roman) and live his own life. It would’ve been great representation for people who have trouble with their identity. If Rick wanted to add something tragic to Jason’s story then he could’ve done something else. Or he could’ve prolonged his death after doing at least a bit of Jason’s development.

With his relationship with Piper, I didn’t care much for the romance in HOO but felt it was getting better when they both agreed to restart their relationship in BOO. When I read that they broke up, I was upset because the reasoning contradicted what happened in BOO, and Rick didn’t show us (the readers) why it didn’t work out during that time skip. And Piper moving on so fast after Jason’s death left a bad taste in my mouth. It was shown before Jason’s death that the two still had feelings for each other after the breakup. The timeline from Jason’s death to the end of the TOA series was around 2-3 months, which seems a bit short for someone to move on after their first love died. Maybe Piper’s girlfriend is a rebound but I’m still meh with Piper moving on at that time. Also note that I’m not upset about Piper having a girlfriend. I’m a part of the community and am all in for representation.

Jason not reuniting with Leo was so bad. He deserved to see him again as much as Piper. Coach Hedge assuming Jason broke up with Piper and being mad at him was so disrespectful. A big part of Hedge is him caring about the Lost Hero trio and it was disregarded because of drama. I consider TOA worse than HOO and non-canon. Honestly, the series made me not care about the new releases for the series. I’m only interested in the Nico story because he’s at least well-written and justice for Bob.

I’m thinking of writing an essay on how I would rewrite Jason’s character and development but it would take a while and I don’t have the time.

Least Favorite of the Seven?

My least favorite member is Piper. She’s just kind of bland to me and TOA didn’t really put her into my good graces. My opinion on her was a rollercoaster. I liked her at first, then it went down, went up around the Mark of Athena, and then went really down in TOA. I am going to write a reason why Piper is my least favorite soon. 

Jason used to be my least favorite, but the last two books of the HOO series and the third book of TOA made me adore him.

Hot Take : The Heroes of Olympus might be Rick Riordan's worst written series, with the most interesting characters.

Compare this series with PJo. Though it was written in the first person, both the story and characters were three dimensional. I usually have a visual representation running in my head when I read books, and this series became my favorite because I was able to feel the emotions and plot like it was personal.

On the other hand, HoO was much more two dimensional when it came to the plot. Half of the time, most of my re-reads were just skipping to parts I liked.

The characters were the most interesting part in the story for me, and they too could have been much better.

I understand why Leo is a big favorite. The way Leo was written was top tier, and he would have been my favorite if I didn't get distracted by Piper Mclean, and Jason Grace.

Both characters have so much potential, and its that reason that drew me to them.

Piper Mclean was so much more to me, because she was strong and smart, and reliable, and someone the rest went to for comfort or strength. But she was also beautiful, the daughter of a goddess who usually sat in the sidelines watching the drama (that she usually started) unfold around her.

Piper Mclean wanted to take a stand.

Jason Grace was the golden child, the one who was handed the baton, and was told to be the child he should be, and he took it with no questions asked. He was hardworking, resilient, loyal, and he loved his friends so much that he died for them.

He was a hero, and it wasn't because of his father.

All the characters are so beautifully intricate and human, but the writing doesn't allow us to see it.

As much as I'm excited for a solo book on solangelo, I really wanted a book focusing on Piper and Jason after the war. I wanted to see them trying to find Leo, trying not to give up, the breaking point where Piper realized this entire relationship wasn't real, the break up, them still being friends and having to remind themselves that they were never dating, and it was all just a fever dream.

I wanted to see them going into that parking lot and being separated, that fear of losing another friend, I wanted to see Jason learning that one of them wasn't going to be around that long, his mindset, him deciding that he wouldn't let Piper die, them fighting outside, Piper knowing Jason was going to do something reckless, and them going their separate ways, because Piper can't bare another friend keeping a secret from her, because she still feels guilty over Leo, and inside she still feels as if the reason Leo didn't tell them the plan was because he didn't trust her, didn't trust them.

The story doesn't have a happy ending. Its a prequel, its everything that lead up to Jason's sacrifice. Piper and Jason were always a tragedy, and I feel like Rick could have expanded on that.

I can't believe people are still shitting on Piper Mclean and calling Piper powerless and shit like SHE COULD MAKE YOU KILL YOURSELF WHY ARE WE FORGETTING THAT?!?!?!

Heroes of olympus but they're just normal highschoolers

Annabeth is on student council, no doubt. She hangs out in Chiron's office with Percy so much that there's a couch in the corner reserved for them to sit on and talk. She used to be in chess club because she loves strategy, but chess is incredibly slow paced, and she has ADHD so she switched to debate.

Percys on the swim team, we know this. He's also on a basketball team, but he's benched because he keeps missing practice. And when he's out of school, he hangs out at the skatepark.

Leo doesn't like his foster home, so he spends most days at Piper's house. He's only met her mum once, and she made him go to school in those goofy ass suspenders (get my boy out of those suspenders and give him some jorts). He takes a home ec and cooking class, but he also does an automotive course, and he's looking into going to Tafe.

Piper is on debate with Annabeth, but instead of relying on facts like Annabeth does in her arguments, she has a way with words that make the opponent empathise with her hypothetical standpoint. She begged her dad not to home-school her, but she gets nervous that someone's gonna find out she's a nepo-baby. She was a pageant girl growing up.

Hazel's in the equestrian club. She loves her horse, and she's a huge World War 2 nerd. Got a transatlantic accent from watching too many old timey movies. Wholeheartedly believes in ghosts and is convinced she's a medium.

Jason is on student council, but he's basically just Annabeth's assistant. He does track, football, and fencing for extra curricular, though.

Frank is a boarding student, so he stays at the school and then leaves back to Canada on school holidays. He doesn’t really do any extra curriculars, but he volunteers at an animal shelter on weekends. Loves helping the puppies and stuff.

Little bit of backstory!

She had been dipped in the river lethe when she was young probably around four or five and then she spent her next couple years with Krono’s army until the battle of manhattan when she joined camp and she’s been there since helping out and occasionally going on small quests.

Godly parent

Like I said in the poll she’s unclaimed! And it’s not just because she’s only ten, even when she gets older she’s never really claimed! None of the gods know whose kid she is! when she became thirteen they even had a whole talk about it but none of them knew! She does have a godly parent but it’s yet to be figured out by anyone! Even without a godly parent however she does have powers! Lots of them! She has a wide arrange of powers suited for different gods, she’s not overly powerful with each power but with the amount of different skills she has she’s pretty strong, she’s got powers ranging from Percy’s water powers and horse talking to pipers charm-speak, and even Nico’s shadow traveling and Meg’s plant powers! Her powers alone aren’t very strong but together they’re awesome!

did the show just delete the fact that percy was a wanted criminal in the entirety of the lightning thief? gabe gave an interview, blaming percy for sally's dissappearence, which made him the primary suspect. like the police was after him when they blew up the bus and his iconic 'my stepdad is a really sweet person' speech to a journalist after jumping from saint monica arc, people conspiring that they were manipulated into a t*rrorist group after his fight with ares. like????? where's all that?? where's the good stuff???

****3rd Person P.O.V****

Nico felt somewhat empty as he walked towards Will Solace after clearing things up with Percy. He felt empty yet full, if that makes any sense. Both because of what he had just done. Empty because it was finally out and filled with fear of...........he couldn't pinpoint what, but it was still there.

Nico still loved him, that's for sure, even if he had just said otherwise. He didn't want things to be cleared up between them. He wanted to latch himself to even the slightest bit of hope left. But he was also scared; scared that he would be left with nothing if he put even a little bit more into the hope. And now he had already said that he didn't like him anymore.

His head was clouded with these thoughts, all the emotions overwhelming him as he moved with his head lowered, mind in a deep in conflict. This almost caused him to crash into Will who caught him by his shoulders, calling his name; snapping him out of the trance.

"Huh? What did you say?" the smaller of the two asked as a slight blush of embarrassment dusted his cheeks.

"I asked: what did you say, Nico? Percy seems to be frozen in shock, Annabeth is grinning wider than the cat from Alice In The Wonderland and you seem......exhausted." Will asked with a hint of worry in his voice.

"Nothing too important." Nico replied. 'Well, he is right. I am pretty exhausted'. He thought. "Okay, lets head to the infirmary to fulfill the 'doctor's order'." He said as he walked ahead, a tinge of sarcasm in his tone. He saw Will blush ever so slightly, making Nico smirk as he once again fixed his gaze at the ground.

A few minutes of walking got them to their destination, the infirmary. Nico stepped in as Will stood by the doorframe indicating the son of Hades to do so.

The infirmary was filled with people injured from the war. The young doctor pointed at a bed that had a glass of Nectar at the bedside table it with a straw sticking out, at least that's what Nico presumed the apple juice look-alike liquid to be; beckoning the skinny boy to go over and get some rest with a slight nod of his head.

The blonde then clutched a clipboard that lay on an unoccupied bed and made his way towards one of his siblings nodding as they discussed the condition of the patient lying unconscious in front of them in soft whispers. The guy talking to Will, Jerry, looked over at Nico and an impish grin spread across his face. He then whispered something to Will, making him turn a bright shade of red.

Nico wondered what could make the son of Apollo so flustered and not to mention just how adorable the golden haired boy looked. He shook his head to stop his thoughts right there, it was none of his business. Will glanced towards him and did a 'shoo' kind of motion with his free hand, a small smile gracing his slightly chapped lips with his tan cheeks still tinged with that reddish color; the action clearly telling him to go ahead and get some rest.

Nico obliged. He sat with his legs crossed on the bed, the glass now in his hands and the straw in his mouth. He wasn't exactly told to drink it, yeah, but he was dead tired. He never really liked Nectar or Ambrosia; he couldn't figure out what they tasted like, maybe that's why it isn't as effective on him as it is on others. He was told it was supposed taste like a comfort food that held great sentimental value to the consumer and with his memories not exactly there, he couldn't recall what it was. 'Just my luck' a sigh left his lips as he set the glass back on the table.

He plopped on the bed, his head burring in the linen pillow and inhaled a deep breath, the smell of disinfectant filling his nostrils. As soon as he closed his eyes all the anxiety came crashing down on him, causing him to inhale a sobbing breath through his quivering lips. The sound produced was minimal but still managed to catch a certain blue-eyed healer's attention.

Will looked over to Nico and tilted his head as if making sure he heard what he heard. When he saw the position the black-haired was at, he figured he might as well go and check in on him.

He softly patted Nico's shoulder to get his attention. He then tenderly grabbed the wrist of the boy who was now sitting, to check his pulse. He then peered into his dark eyes for any signs of sickness, drowning in them, eyes that reminded him of chocolate, soft and sweet.

'Just a little longer' Will stared. Nico blinked, making the taller of the two realize that he had been staring. Will turned away as he felt his face heating up while Nico didn't seem to comprehend what the matter was.

"Feel free to look for me if needed." He said in that gentle doctor tone of his and started to leave, just to stop after taking a few steps and looking back at the demigod who was at awe of how different he was with his patients, Nico remembered him yelling at Octavian not long ago. "Three days' rest, Nico, physical and mental, you need it."

Those words caught Nico by surprise and a small smile tugged at his lips. "Sure" was all he said before laying back down on the bed. He once again closed his eyes, this time inhaling a deep breath to get ready for drifting off into the realm of Morpheus.

Nico was free-falling; falling into what seemed an abyss of eternal darkness that sucked all the light. 'Ughh.... Not this again!' He thought, clutching his sides and shutting his eyes tight. The air rushed past him as he fell with impossible speed, making it hard for him to breathe. The never ending cycle had begun yet again; he had been having the same nightmares ever since he fell there; he had different dreams too. Well, not exactly dreams, but yeah.

Nico curled up in a ball as he continued to fall down, entirely helpless. But this time something changed. Just as his curled up body was about to hit the red surface of Tartarus he slowed, the air rushing calmer than before. He opened his eyes and peeked from between his knees to see the ground shuffle and churn until it was no longer red but yellow. 'Okay, that's new.' This change confused him, causing him to let go of his knees that he had hugged oh-so-tightly and straighten his body so that his feet gently touched the soft ground.

'Sand, land covered by sand.' Cold sensations ran from his pale cheeks and all over his exposed skin as he felt tiny droplets of water hit him. Nico, surprised by the sudden feeling jolted his head up to take in his surroundings. He was not wrong; the ground indeed was cored with sand as waves crashed on the shore not too far from him. 'A beach?'

The blue sky was turning more and more orange with each passing minute as the sun set over the horizon. The beach seemed decorated for some sort of occasion; seats lined up, occupied by his "friends", fairy lights intertwined on poles and an aisle decorated with baby blue and grey theme; it was all breathtaking.

'A wedding! A wedding........?'. Nico froze as his gaze wandered over to the groom. Inhaling a sharp breath he locked eyes with the groom, with his perfect windblown ebony hair and slightly teary sea green eyes. He wore a white three-piece suit accompanied with a sky blue bow tie, smiling and holding out his hand. Nico's heart sped up to a million miles per second as his own eyes started to well up.

Nico stood in a frozen daze for a few seconds; recovering only when a single tear slipped out of Percy's eyes and rolled down his tan cheek only to be wiped by the son of Poseidon. Nico took a step forward, the groom still looking his direction expectantly. That's when it hit him: Percy was looking his direction, yes, but not at him.

The raven haired boy turned around just to find Annabeth adorned in a white fishtail wedding gown that flowed behind her and on the carpet that was laid. The gown had boat neckline with sleeves that ran all the way to her palms where she held a rather full bouquet that consisted only of blue flowers. Hydrangea, Forget me or not's and Blue carnations just to name a few.

The girl's golden locks were done in a neat crown braid with a few strands out to perfectly frame her face. A beautiful silver locket rested on the middle her chest, just above where the gown started. The pendant was a cute-little owl, its eyes embedded with two bright sapphires and matching earrings to top it off. She looked gorgeous.

Nico's heart painfully contracted.' Obviously,' he chided himself as he scrambled out of the way with clumsy steps. 'What was I expecting, Percy to marry me? Who was I kidding?' He watched as Annabeth walked past him, towards the son of Poseidon who took her hand in his with a face dripping of love as she climbed up the steps. Nico daren't move a muscle as he watched as the 'couple of the day' smiling at each other with the purest expressions of utter adoration.

His eyes stung as his small frame began to shake. The vows were now being said. His knees were giving out and he stumbled; tears made their way down his cheeks as he heard the boy who he loved vow himself to someone else for the rest of their lives.

Nico crashed onto the ground, head held in hands, uncontrollable sobs racking his hunched body. Between his sobs he heard the priest say "Now the groom may kiss the bride." His head shot up involuntarily. His vision was blurred but he could still make out their silhouettes leaning in to kiss as the crowd cheered them on with claps.

He felt immense pain spread through his chest and all over his body as he tried to breath. His head feltlike exploding as he yelled in pain and blacked out.

His eyes shot open as he himself shot up and in a sitting position. He was sitting on one of the infirmary beds, his cheeks tear-stained and hair sticking out from different places. Someone rushed to Nico's side and sat beside him. They put their hands around his shoulders; making him flinch hard.

The person withdrew nervously. Nico looked at their direction; the silhouette looked like a male's. He couldn't tell who it was though, it was too dark and the tears that blurred his sight didn't help either. The only thing he could take in were the blonde hair that shone golden with the little moonlight that filtered through the windows hitting them. "It's just a nightmare, it's not real." Will said in a soothing voice.

"It's okay." He reassured Nico, putting his arms on his shoulders once again; this time much more cautious and slower, giving the boy time to protest if his touch was unwelcome. But this time around, Nico welcomed the comfort that the warm hand radiated.

"Let it all out. It's good to cry it out when you are in pain." Nico couldn't see him but he heard a weird emotion in his voice. 'Worry?', he thought as realization struck him. "You wanna talk about it?"

That question made him wince and shake his head in denial, still trying to calm his breathing down. "Hey....It's okay. You don't have to if you don't want to." He said, patting his back. Nico buried his face in his slightly calloused hands as the son of Apollo sat there, comforting him with gentle pats on his back and soothing words.

After about half an hour of sobbing and sniffling, Nico finally calmed down. He decided to rest his eyes as they stung. Too tired to open them again, he kept them closed. Will peered over at the boy's face to find his beautiful chocolate eyes hidden behind pale eyelids. He let out a sigh as laid him down.

Will Solace sat there, staring at the now-peaceful face of Nico Di Angelo. "How am I gonna hold back if you lay so unguarded and vulnerable in front of me?" He whispered as he brushed a stray tear off of one pale cheek and brushing the hair that had now fallen to cover the small boy's eyes to leave lingering kiss on his forehead.

With another sigh leaving his lips, he stood up and walked away. Little did he know that Nico was awake and had heard and felt everything Will had said and done. The son of Hades lay there; his eyes wide open, the exhaustion no longer a bother; face a deep crimson.

Annabeth clarified without a second thought, earning an amused huff from the son of Jupiter and an offended scoff from Leo as he was snapped out from his mini-spiral just to shout, “I can hear you, ya know!?”

“I know.”

Silly HC that in some very stressful situation where Leo was super anxious and thinking about a million things, Hazel said "you are not thinking straight", Leo's instinct spoke louder and he accidentally said "Of course not, I'm bi".

Percy looks like he's going to say something else, confused, but stop.

Frank passes Piper 5 dollars, narrowing his eyes

I refuse to accept that Percy and the others are millennial. So here what I propose, we as the fandom decided that they’re all born after 1995. Retweet so that everyone knows.

I’m 99.9% sure that at least half of the seven ended in a Walmart parking lot at 3am with no idea of how they got there one point in theirs lives

When Percy had amnesia, was homeless and at the same time fighting for his life against two gorgons sister, he was worried abt how his mom and Annabeth are gonna react when they learn he stole a police car

When I think of the most common sense and level headed couple in PJO I think of a tree spirit and a half goat

Jason: I fought this vicious, dangerous, scary opponent when I was young which left me with this battle scar.

Piper: What he meant is he tried eating a staple when he was two

Jason:... Well you aren’t wrong

Grover: Hey Percy, do you wanna eat enchiladas

Weird how the non canon ships in Rick Riordan's books tend to have a better and more interesting history together, better chemistry, healthier dynamics,and feel more natural than the canon couples; plus a lot of wasted potential. Examples are Reyna x Jason, Nico x Percy, Rachel x Percy, Leo x Piper, Jason x Nico or Jason x Leo.

It's like the more Rick wants you to ship something,the more it feels forced and has red flags that are kinda hard to ignore. The only exception being Hazel and Frank
