Is it Over Now? so perfectly describes the rollercoaster and uncertainty of an on off relationship where you keep thinking “ok it’s definitely over now”!and then end up hooking up again, so clearly it wasn’t, and while each of these “was it over when..” should’ve been the moment the end was sealed and yet .. none of them were .. and you are left wondering .. is it over now? I can’t think of any song that addresses this so well it’s just perfection

i’m so serious the way she talks about love in 1989 being imperfect but blazingly beautiful and having to navigate life before, during, and after that because yeah how do you go back to ‘normal’ life after something so worthwhile all while trying to navigate a world full of so many societal pressures as a young adult on your own and how because of those pressures and outside loneliness the world was black and white and dull and so that love was like a meteor and colorful and big and bright

i truly do think that this is why her music speaks to her audience in the way that it does, because it's so authentically her. taylor's personality, vulnerability, emotions, perspective are all very alive in her writing and that touches people. this is interesting because i'd say that pete's writing has always been a raw, expressive reflection of himself too - and that inspired taylor, after all! - but it can be harder to see that in yourself or to recognize that genuineness when you feel more like you're pulling yourself apart. there's very much an energy that resonates in both of their work, and even though they don't personally know each other that well, the mutual professional respect and admiration is such a cool thing to see. it must be so wild and fulfilling to her to now be an inspiration to the very artists she herself found that in when she was starting out

but the theory doesn’t insist on the song being about calvin or joe tho especially joe because it’s before they met? i think maybe she had some parts done in 2015 here but redid it later in 2016 and changed it obviously

'Gold cage, hostage to my feelings' refers to being trapped by love. Similar to Stockholm Syndrome, which was released only 2 weeks before the VS party, Taylor is trapped in a gold/gilded cage (a luxurious prison) by love.

The afterparty was in Basement bar. The illusionist/magician references are enjoying knowing that she and her muse will leave together without others knowing. 'Make all grey days clear' tells us the muse is British.

The bridge tells us more about her relationship with her muse, they have a history, have hurt each other before and are wanting to move on. I just keep thinking like, how much Joe helped Taylor become herself and grow as a person - not in the way that like, a man deserves all the credit, but it is so clear that he and their relationship helped her get to a place where she could discuss the topics on folklore / evermore / Midnights, where she could make her political post, hell even the amount of seductive choreo skyrocketed from 1989 to rep and then to Eras because she feels so comfortable with herself, and I don’t doubt that he was a part of that journey. Even if all he did was stand by her, he gave her the confidence to do it all and having that rock really deeply helped her. And like, whatever happened, but it’s clear to me that relationship made her into the best version of herself she could be, and that’s what any wonderful relationship is supposed to do and that is both beautiful and so fucking heartbreaking. And no matter what happened I am so grateful to him to have given those gifts to her.
