My hope is to learn from this experience and so far it's been pretty good, I also just recently got obsessed over Moomin from the 90's and Moominvalley 2019 so yeah...

someone on here wanted a dib and nene swap and even though the post was from a while ago i thought it would've been a cute idea to draw
naturally when i drew them out my brain started coming up with ideas on how the stories would change, so more info about that under the cut
dib's family had moved to japan thanks to membrane's scientific research leading them to the country.
it didn't take long for dib to learn about the school wonders, more specifically about hanako. determined to truly prove the existence of the paranormal, dib summons hanako. dib got a little than be bargained for as hanako himself proved to be quite the trickster.
during the multiple failed attempts to get his school mates to notice hanako, dib accidentally swallowed a mermaid scale. although hanako helped dib keep the mermaid's curse to a minimum in exchange into becoming his assistant, dib does keep trying to expose hanako as well as other super naturals to the world.
nene was always known as the weird girl with the radish legs in her class. her fondness with that not of earth only motivated the weirdness people saw in her.
on the day zim arrived, he was taken aback by how excited nene was in meeting him. he was prepared for the humans to ignore his existence, yet there was nene actively wanting to learn more about her new classmate.
zim mistook this enthusiasm as a sign that nene was willing in helping his world domination plan. this mistake caused zim to drag nene around in his multiple attempts to destroy earth. nene, quick to understand her situation but unwilling to fully antagonize zim, secretly thwarts his plans while remaining his friend.

Would it be interesting if Zim would also plot his plan for revenge on the tallest similar what Spinel did, but also become friends with Dib along the way since he is also an outcast from society?
I had no idea what I was doing with this au, but it’s somewhat starting to come together...
However, after I saw the Steven Universe: The Movie, it gave me more ideas. Hopefully, i might have the time to sketch it out!

All things considered Dib's Dilemma is objectively pretty low down on the scale of ways in which Dib has been psychologically tormented over the course of canon, but I'm not sure if anything has ever made me feel so genuinely distressed about it, because the entire thing is Dib practicing genuine empathy from a place of personal experience towards someone who never has and never will do the same for him.
Something both Dib and Membrane seem to have in common is an almost pathological need to maintain their version of the Truth™ no matter the personal consequence—they cannot make concessions or compromise their views even for their own direct benefit. Only that's exactly what Dib does here, and it is genuinely just so maddeningly backwards to watch this kid go to bat for a father who has never once validated him or protected him from ridicule, specifically because he knows how unbearable it is to be constantly disrespected and disbelieved. He proves Professor Membrane right at his own expense, because it's the thing he wants most in the world and he loves his father too much to withhold it the way it's been withheld from him.
And what REALLY fucks with me is that Membrane understands exactly how significant this is (perhaps because it is exactly the thing that he's never been able to bring himself to do). He understands the sacrifice being made and still he will not do the same. I literally cannot overstate how much I hate it when this man is self-aware.
Hey y'all, I'm watching Invader Zim again cause it's my favorite show and very nostalgic for me, and I love it a whole lot. Anyway, I know it's a show where they didn't put much thought into many of the details, but I'm a person who likes to overthink stupid little details. Now, on to my point, one thing that always stuck out to me for no reason was the sticky note that started it all.
It's clear that someone felt the need to mark some mystery planet just beyond the Irken map, whether or not they meant to mark Earth or some other planet vaguely to that side is debatable, but why mark it at all if there was nothing of interest out that way? You wouldn't. However, you would mark a mystery planet if you thought it was important. Perhaps some foreign intel from another species gave you clues that there was something useful over there, or maybe you were catching odd signals out that way. What's more is with the way Red and Purple talk I don't think that note was left by either of them, if they knew something they wanted to explore was out there they would never have sent Zim of all people, and they talk like they don't think any planet exists beyond their map and are genuinely surprised that Zim found one. If I had to guess, I'd say it was left by a previous tallest who never got around to sending anyone out there and went unnoticed after that until Red and Purple needed a convenient excuse to send Zim as far away as possible. After all, we know Zim caused the death of two tallests in his lifetime alone. It's highly possible they had left unfinished business behind.
Basically, this was a long-winded way of saying that I think the note that marks earth was always interesting.
