But Who's Counting?

It's been two months, fourteen days, and six hours since Volo found himself defeated and utterly hopeless. But who's counting? His plans of creating a new, better world were destroyed by the 'Hero of Hisui' and yet, he can't bring himself to hate them.

As much as Volo wanted to hate them, he just couldn't! Their determination, their belief in something better, and even their annoying attitude that sent him leaving like a Pokémon with its tail between its legs drew him in to wanting them. Missing them. Longing for them.

While he hadn't been officially exiled from Jubilife Village, it was the idea that the Hero of Hisui would reveal his true intentions and plans that would lead to his exile. So he remained hidden in the caves of Mt. Coronet, hoping, pleading, praying to Arceus above that there was someplace left for him in Hisui.

Volo felt desperate. Desperate for human contact once again. Desperate for some of that famous potato mochi. Desperate for the comfort from the Hero of Hisui who had destroyed his attempt for a better life for himself. For them.

Though Volo would never admit it at the time of the battle, he was hoping they would accept his offer to join him in the new world he would have created if successful. But he doubted it - especially after he encouraged Giratina to kill them.

With a sigh, Volo found himself looking for berries one morning as the sun was peeking over the horizon, Volo heard his Togekiss chirp.

"She's probably just hungry..." Volo muttered to himself, turning to feed the bird some berries before the rest of his Pokémon. What can he say? Togekiss had always been his favorite of the six he wielded.

But instead, he found himself face to face with someone he thought had left him for dead and abandoned him.

The Hero of Hisui.

"Volo?" They asked and looked at the taller man with hesitancy and confusion. He looked a bit weaker than the last time they saw him. His hair was no longer in the signature bun we always wore, but rather down to his back and a bit tangled, as if he has left it to its own devices - very much unlike the Volo they knew. Additionally, Volo's facade of the happy-go-lucky merchant was long gone. Left was the shell of a man who had seen his dreams disappear before his eyes.

There was a moment of awkward silence between the two. One looked defeated and broken while the other was still in their Survey Corps uniform, likely completing their Pokédex for that overly kind professor.

Volo blinked. Once, twice, three times. "Yes?" He asked, unsure where to even begin at the prospect of a conversation with the person whose trust he broke in the matter of minutes.

They looked at Volo, weary to approach the former merchant who had threatened their life and the fate of the world as they know it.

He grew impatient. What did the hero want? To scold him? Tell him off? Have their Pokémon attack him until he's left weeping and begging for mercy? But none of those sounded like them. No, not at all. They were always too kind, too soft, too perfect.

"Are you just going to stand there or-" But Volo is interrupted.

"I've been looking for you." The truth is out. Volo stepped back in surprise as Togekiss chirped a bit more, nuzzling up to the Hero of Hisui's side, which allowed them to cautiously pet her.

"Pardon me?" Volo looked at them incredulously. What do they mean by they have looking for him? The man who betrayed them?

Surprisingly, they chuckled at Volo's confusion. "You're an enigma. But I had to find you... for answers." But if Volo wasn't mistaken, that last part sounded more like they were convincing themself of their motives more than anything else.

Now it's Volo's turn to laugh. "What is there to know?"

"Why you left, for one," They snapped a little, their patience had worn thin a long time ago with the former merchant. "Or maybe I want to know why you tried to kill me after you took me under your wing while I was exiled, hm?"

Volo was speechless. Why had he left? Why had he tried to murder the person he had grown accustomed to and dare he say trust just for his goals. Maybe he could blame it on his ambition, and determination his willingness to fight for his goals. Or perhaps it was all the pain he had experienced in his life being one of the last of the Ancient SInnoh people aside from Cogita - which he hasn't been in contact with for a few days as she's truly been the one to keep him afloat.

But Volo's next words surprised him.

"Guilt."

They're taken aback as they looked at Volo like he's lost his mind.

"Guilt?" They echoed, a look of confusion written across their face once more. "For what?" They truly tried to be sincere, but it came out more as a scoff.

"Don't make me explain myself, please," Volo whispered weakly, his usually imposing frame was hunched over and looked fragile. Something they had never seen before.

"I never told anyone, you know."

"About what? My plans or my attempt to take your life?" His tone was full of sarcasm now as his glare sharpened. As long as he had this mask of a defensive man who claimed to care about nobody, the Hero of Hisui could never find out his true feelings - how much he craved for them to speak to him again.

"Both."

"Oh."

There's another awkward silence.

"Why?"

They sighed and felt all the emotions come back to them from that day. "Because... I don't think you meant what you did."

There was that stupidly positive attitude again. Volo wanted to roll his eyes and to scream, but he stood still as he waited patiently for them to continue.

"There has to be some resemblance of the man I knew before he went mad." Togekiss chirped in Volo's defense, backing away from them as they glanced down at the bird. "No offense, Togekiss." The bird went back and nuzzled against their hand for more pets.

Volo looked away, guilt was eating him from the inside. He glanced at the berry in his hand and tossed it to Togekiss, who happily accepted the treat.

"Am I right? Or have you lost your sense of self?"

They had a look of anticipation in their eyes. One that made Volo avert his gaze from them.

"It depends on what qualities you're looking for..." Volo sighed, feeling the guilt weigh down on his shoulders even more. How could they have such high expectations for him after all he had done?

Although they were about seven meters away from Volo before, they approached him, now just a meter away.

"Perhaps I don't know, but I'd be willing to find out with you." They extended their hand for Volo to take. Like a peace offering.

Volo blinked as he glanced at their hand. Then gazed into their eyes.

Hesitantly, Volo reached out and grasped their hand firmly in acceptance.

Two months, fourteen days, and six hours ago, Volo would have yanked them to the ground and claimed victory over their weakness and trust.

Now, two months, fourteen days, and six hours later, Volo found himself accepting of their offer, wanting to find himself again. But who's counting?
