Sock Appreciation Post 🧦

Since we loving and appreciating INTHAF today, here are some things I’ve noticed:

The lyrics don’t talk about one linear story but moments when those feelings are evoked

The first part introduces those feelings (sharing gloves, playing video games, passing notes)

The second part finds them again much later in the beginnings of love (the nerve to touch my hand which ties back to the gloves, twenty questions which ties back to video games, conversation which ties back to notes), this person stirs feelings just as pure and true as the ones found in the innocent discoveries of childhood

The change from snow to a clear light pink sky shows the change in time and both literal and metaphorical season

The third part realizes these feelings in true love (sidewalk chalk covered in snow and rice on the ground looks like snow)

True love brings back the whimsy and sweetness we thought could only be found in childhood :’)

The simplicity of the writing and music are genius bc they reiterate those points as well as emphasize how simple true love is at its core (a theme found throughout Lover in general)

When I was 16

And she was one of them

Back then she was somebody's girlfriend

And I was no one

I had nothing

Anyway, I keep picturing all these little lights playing some game in this big field of sky and all. 2000 tiny lights, and nothing around - nothing big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some daisy song. What I have to do, I have to match anybody if they start to go over the song, I mean if they're playing and they don't know what they're doing, I have to come out from nowear and match them. That's all I do all day. I'd just be the matcher in the sky and all. I know I'm lazy, but that's the only place I'd really like to be.

Remember the photo from studio she posted right after she sighed the contract with Republic Records?

She took it when she was recording “Lover” (song) and proof of it is a little behind the scene video where she plays Lover acoustic in the same clothes.

SHE HAD A HEART ON HER FACE DURING LOVER RECORDING. IM NOT OK.

I hadn’t done a Rolling Stone cover in 5 years, and hadn’t seen Brian Hiatt since I got in 2 car crashes while driving him around during our interview in 2012. 🤦‍♀️ There were no cars driven this time, but we had a lot to catch up on. Thank you Rolling Stone and Brian for everything you did to make this cover happen. And Erik Madigan Heck for taking these photos, absolutely loved working with you!
