I lost my best friend 3 years ago- not lost as in dead but lost as in we only text each other on our birthdays now. Movies and books don't tell you that a friendship dying is like the sinking of a ship, you try to get higher and higher and hold onto the rails and unanswered texts, the captain tries to steer it to safety and salvage pieces of two broken hearts until you're left with memories of what once was. We were friends for a decade and knew each other's diaries by heart, I still remember her phone number and the way she took her coffee. Seeing her in streets is like breathing in a scent you forgot you knew but it immediately takes you back to a summer in '07.

Movies and books also don't tell you that friendships don't just end after one fight or incident, it's like the rusting of a bridge, the slow decay of flesh and bones and secrets. It took weeks, months- until one day I woke up and I realized I hadn't thought of her in a while. And I wrote a poem that day and I titled it 'The dying of a best friend' and I put all my love for her in a tiny box with my half of the matching pendant of a dolphin we had and stored them in a corner of my heart under the heading Grief. Where else can one hide unspent love?

I’d just like to talk about filmmaking and the CW for a hot minute.

Katie is very much correct about 1 thing: It’s not up to the creator to decide, how the audience will interpret their work.

You (the CW) can be a producer with tons of a experience, and make a show that you’ve worked on extensively, and you might still not get your message across to the audience. Or they might see things you didn’t intend to put out there. It happens, art is up for interpretation and there’s nothing to be done about it.

So suddenly, you find yourself with 2 actors with great chemistry. Lucky you, most people work hard to get that familiarity going and you just had it dumped in your lap. Here’s the deal though, perhaps that extra second of keeping the camera on their faces as they look at each other is enough for the audience to think there’s some tension between them. Don’t freak out, that’s OK. Again, it’s the audience’s job to pick up stuff here and there from your work that you didn’t intend to put out there. 

The question is, what do you do with this information, if it’s something you can work on?

If your show is solid, as in, you’ve created compelling characters who have arcs that are constantly evolving and plot lines that are leading somewhere and don’t get dumped and forgotten for the sake of new ones, people will keep watching the show regardless of what you do with the romances (unless the romances are the main theme of your story). You can keep an unplanned pairing platonic, in that sweet will they/won’t they spot, for quite a while if you’re a good writer.

But here’s the thing. If the only reason viewers tune in, is the pairing, you’re in some deep shit. Because if you keep the interactions platonic just to keep your show alive, you’re teasing the audience. You’re baiting them into tuning in to a bad show for the sake of unresolved tension. Basically, you’re not doing a good job. 

So, regardless of accusations of queerbaiting, which, in this case are accurate, you’re just not doing a good job. And the least you can do in the last season, after your show has been canceled, is have the balls to at least deliver what you’ve teased the audience into keeping your work alive and your paycheck running for - which is for the relationship to become canon. It’s really not that complicated.

This country claims to be democratic but 9 unelected people who's values and opinions formed decades prior, who can get into this position without strong or even any valid credentials, can decide to negatively impact or even destroy millions of lives and they cannot be held accountable for it. They can't be impeached or voted out. It's only the most convoluted combination of election-year voting, voter suppression/lack thereof, and idk fucking cowardice from both sides that got any of them to where they are now. 9 people who are cemented in their beliefs and then use the law and constitution to justify their moral opinions that they insist don't influence their rulings at all. We can't vote then out. We just have to hope they retire or die under the presidency of someone who doesn't want to actively kill everything, and eve then we have to contend with any given republican or spineless Democrat in the Senate.

And even then, we cannot get rid of them. Nine people make decisions for 300+ million, affecting their ability to defend themselves, to live peacefully, to lead healthy and happy and safe lives. Nine people can ruin lives for decades to come.

Nine people. Nine. People.

i have never felt as mature as when i finally understood (through therapy) and internalized (through emotional work) that you cannot connect and communicate with some people no matter how kind, compassionate, understanding, articulate, eloquent, or smart you are, and that sometimes a person not listening to you does not reflect on your communication skills or ability to connect or straight up intelligence. in a way, it’s letting go of the belief that you have the power to make people understand you. communication is a two-way street, and needs two willing participants. some people are just walls, and it has been unbelievably helpful for my mental and emotional health to let it slide and know that it does not affect me or my self worth.
