Tips On Screenwriting

– Yay! The first of the beginners’ series on writing! I hope this is useful to those of you who requested advice on screenwriting. I have a few more short articles coming out about screenwriting in the future, but for now, here’s a general list of tips.

Parentheticals (Directions) ~ Don’t overdo it with the acting directions. Let the actors do their jobs and interpret the characters and the script. If it’s absolutely necessary that you specify how you want something said, then do so, but for the most part, allow the actors and director some creative freedom.

Cliches ~ Research movie cliches and avoid them. Here’s a fabulous article that lists a few of them.

Dialogue ~ Avoid doing pages and pages of dialogue in one scene. 

Opening Scene ~ Start your script in a strategic place and with strategic tone. Make an impression.

Archetypes ~ Use them. Mold them. Make them your own. Archetypes, however, should never be confused with stereotypes. 

Description ~ Screenwriting is minimalist. Describe what is necessary, leave room for interpretation, and leave much detail to the imagination.

Subtext ~ Utilise subtext by showing instead of telling. It’s a screenplay after all. Show us that the dog was barking instead of having a character yell “the dog is barking!”

Format ~ Know the format. Get to know the style of scriptwriting and use it correctly.

Length ~ 1 page of a script is usually about 1 minute of screentime. Most film scripts are about 120 pages long and therefore 120 minutes of runtime. Most tv show episodes are from 22 minutes to 42 minutes. be wary of page count, as time is an important factor in filmmaking.

A comma splice walks into a bar, it has a drink and then leaves.

A question mark walks into a bar?

Two quotation marks “Walk into” a bar.

A gerund and an infinitive walk into a bar, drinking to drink.

The bar was walked into by a passive voice.

Three intransitive verbs walk into a bar. They sit. They drink. They leave.

I could not agree more. This story plot setup may have worked well for the other LIs but yeah, not with Kaitlyn. Like others have reiterated, This does not only effect Kaitlyn as her character says herself. She is not completely in the wrong here.

So it also puts her in a unique position. No, she did not discuss this with MC before agreeing with it. And no, belittling MC's writing was not a smart response. However, I am not sure how I will feel if she shows up and apologises for being completely in the wrong. Because again, she is not.

MC was not dead set on actually going to London anyway. She could still write in New York. They could do long distance. They could have brainstormed something! But no.

I will retain hope the writers still have this.. I have theories of what will happen.. but I am a little nervous all the same.

What I hate most about the breakup in The Senior, at least in regards to Kaitlyn, isn’t so much that it happened. I figured the Journal and the Parents was setting this up before a big come back to together moment later. No. What bothers me is why it happens. This MC is supposed to be a writer, a potential fiction writer if you decided to do that, and here she is just so unimaginative that she can’t possibly think of any other way this is solved other than breaking up with Kaitlyn? 

Oh, and selfish too? Because Kaitlyn is right. This decision is no longer just theirs anymore. It wasn’t Kaitlyn signed in NYC, it was the band. Now Anissa, Rachel, and Amara are involved. And it’s an actual gig. Even if Kaitlyn sided with MC, the vote would be 3-2. How can the MC feel she has the right to choose for four other people. 

Like, MC, you can write anywhere. But I’ve seen you when you “lose” Kaitlyn, twice, you aren’t happy. 

Okay, now I want to try writing more. 😂

I just realized that a shower scene with Kaitlyn could be... interesting.

If all the sexy diamond scenes in The Junior don’t take place in different locations of the apartment (the shower for one) I’m going to be very disappointed..

*beep beep beep*

Kaitlyn groans face first into her pillow as she blindly seeks out her ringing phone. After a few seconds of searching she finds it on the nightstand and turns off the alarm.

As she lies there, she can’t help but wonder why she tortures herself like this. Why she insists on waking up at this ungodly hour on the regular when she could be fast asleep. Fast asleep and having wonderful dreams.

Kaitlyn groans again. She rolls over and throws the blankets off herself, the cool morning air an unwelcome wake-up call. She gets herself up out of the bed taking a moment to stretch and yawn and then grabs the black shirt hanging on the back of the chair in her room.

After throwing on the shirt she makes her why out of her room and heads to the bathroom. Once done, Kaitlyn cautiously makes her way down the stairs with the sporadic yawn on the way. She enters the hall to come to the door to MC’s room.

She gently knocks on the door and slowly opens it. She peers in with sleepy eyes to find a sleeping MC. Quietly shutting the door behind her, kaitlyn walks up to the bed and proceeds to crawl onto it and over her sleeping beauty.

The previously sleeping MC stirs from the sudden movement on the bed. “You’re late, Liao.” She groggily says. MC slowly opens her eyes to see kaitlyn’s bright smile.

“Shush you, I had to make a pit stop.” Kaitlyn says.

“For coffee I hope?” MC asks. Kaitlyn’s hair, face, and eyes beautifully light up in the morning light now creeping itself in through the window.

“No coffee. But I can give you some sugar.” Kaitlyn flashes a mischievous smile and instantly begins showering MC’s face with kisses.

“Ahh!” MC squirms and giggles from the affection. Satisified, Kaitlyn stops and crawls under the covers next to MC.

They both settle into the comfort of the bed and the warmth of the rising sun. Kaitlyn snuggles up against MC wrapping her arms around her, letting herself fall into this blissful moment.

It is then that Kaitlyn is reminded why she wakes up so early on the regular. And she will continue to do so for nothing could convince her to do otherwise.

Headcanon: Even tho Kaitlyn is not a morning person, she wakes up an hour earlier than she has to so she can go cuddle with her girlfriend <3 (when they don’t sleep together of course)
