the thrilling saga
Awkward question, but what do you think Holmes saw in Watson?
Oh, my goodness. Well, he was everything Holmes needed; wry, and kind, and occasionally snarky, generous with his praise, and honest about his own flaws without being too hard on himself. He loved music and knowledge and beauty. He knew how to live through hardship with dignity and how to enjoy good things when they came without becoming dependent on them. He was adventurous. He was incessantly curious. He was a wonderful listener, and intelligent, and quick to comprehend, and enjoyed being taught. He never let himself be bullied or overawed. He was confident in what he knew. He was compassionate. He was deeply sincere. He knew how to keep others’ secrets, and respect their limits and their privacy and their humanity. He despised cruelty. He didn’t judge by class, but by character. He was a hopeful realist. He was quick to defend Holmes, even from himself. He valued truth and justice above even the law, which is an essential trait in a passionately fair man’s partner. He was capable of instant obedience or of acting promptly on his own instincts, whichever was necessary. He was absurdly brave. And he was a flaming bisexual.
thinking about c!phil. c!phil & techno & how they are soldiers who breathe violence -- how that impacts phil's parenting.
thinking about how they canonically fought together as the antarctic empire. thinking about phil & techno as fellow soldiers, both emotionally stunted, & how they found solace in knowing the other is absolutely loyal. an bloodforged unspoken trust deeper than any verbal oath they could've made. thinking about how often they might have pushed through pain & left it festering & unaddressed bc it was all they knew: don't talk about it. carry on & deal with trauma only when it crops up. it's probably the way both of them deal with it best, but that's not... mentally sustainable.
thinking about how c!phil consistently resorts to violence to solve the big problems (wilbur, l'manberg). thinking about how he can't address ~emotions~ for squat. thinking about how c!techno does the same things.
thinking about the probable lessons they learned from war. the ends justify the means. violence is the only language that people respect. pay an insult back a hundredfold to establish your strength; people will back off. trauma is weakness & people will take advantage of it. keep your true feelings & loyalties close to your chest & continually reevaluate the situation. alliances could fall apart any moment, any situation could be a trap, so paranoia is survival. if you need to, make the hard choice & live with it. blunt the emotional pain by bottling up/dulling your emotions--whatever works. (I'm not super familiar with SMP Earth, so please add some examples if you are!)
thinking about how all of this really doesn't translate well to parenting.
but if that's all c!phil knows, we can't expect him to do it differently.
If only I were stronger still
"Do you remember when you asked me what love was? And I couldn't give you an answer? Well I think that this, right here, is what love is."
"Love is entering into a house on fire just give me a hug?"
"I would go anywhere just to be able to see you"
(old draft i wrote back in like july or august) Phil is an assassin/bounty hunter known as “The Angel of Death” who does contract killing to earn some extra cash to take care of his three sons.
Phil isn’t ashamed of what he does, but it isn’t glamorous so he’d rather no one know about it, and works very hard to hide his identity and his hero persona in general from the public. The Angel of Death is just a rumor around the region and no one that’s seen him has lived to tell the tale (or been sober enough to be believed.)
However, his kids suddenly become OBSESSED with the Angel of death, and Phil has to scramble to keep them from idolizing him and being a bad influence. But they just think he’s sooo cool and don’t wanna let their cool new idol go.
So Phil instead embraces their obsession, crafting a more kid friendly version of The Angel of Death.
He confirms that the Angel is in fact real, but;
“His ACTUAL name is Crow Father, and, no, he doesn’t KILL people. He just watches over the city and is a simple night watcher. In fact, he helps bad guys see the error of their ways by talking to them. All the dead criminals that show up are unrelated and why do you kids even know about that stop watching the news.”
So Tommy, Wilbur, and Techno grow up with a WILDLY different version of the Angel of Death legend, believing him to be just some positive role model for kids that spouts wholesome messages and encourages good habits like “Brush your teeth!” or “clean your room!”
Techno and Wilbur grew out of the Angel of Death obsession a year so after that, thinking he’s just for little kids, but Tommy held onto that phase until he was a teenager, then they all pretty much forgot about it. Phil had long since retired and the Angel of Death legend is all but completely dead, morphing into a tale about a monster, cryptid, or spirit that once roamed the countryside instead of a mysterious killer that targeted criminals.
Phil, thinking his secret is safe, foolishly relaxes for the next few years, positive NO ONE will ever know it was him.
Until his kids come home from being away for quite some time, and start talking about their old obsession. Some dots begin to connect, like the hero’s disappearance sometime when Phil came home with a mysterious stab wound, and why he was always tired like he’d stayed up the entire night…
Meanwhile Phil is chopping onions or something a few feet away listening in just thinking “don’t look at me, don’t look at me, don’t look at me-”
congratulations to mr holmes for finally marrying dr watson 🎉🎉🎉

Hoy me duele Lima,
y hoy me duele Italia.
Hoy me duele Argentina,
