gonna be so real and share a take that would actually get me crucified if i weren’t anon: i am a hardcore komahina shipper (i am also a multishipper nobody get on my ass for the non-controversial part) like i truly believe there is genuine solid evidence for mutual komahina in canon. they are literally made for each other to me they are the love story of the ages komahina real etc etc.
that’s not the controversial part. the part i’m scared to share is that i have not do not and will not ever perceive saiouma this way. it’s like… fine. sure. whatever. i have other ppl i’d prefer to pair them up with but alright have fun. and yeah kokichi is written to at least have some level of surface level attraction to shuichi. but i sometimes see people comparing saiouma to komahina and it makes me feel CRAZY because they are not even remotely close to being on the same level. it’s like comparing fast food to high-end dining to me. i’m sorry but they’re just… not at the same quality or league to me. at all.
it makes me feel like SUCH a hypocrite bc i’ve heard ppl talk shit abt komahina going “ohh hajime shows no signs of reciprocation at all” and immediately i can pull out like 7 different instances and 5 pargraphs of analysis proving otherwise but like. i CANNOT see saiouma as reciprocal i’m sorry!!! that shit is one sided as hell!!! shuichi is confused by kokichi at BEST there is no proper chemistry there!!! hell i’d argue kokichi doesn’t actually even love shuichi that shit is infatuation at most! i’d be fine leaving it alone and minding my business but tbh the saiouma fanbase annoys me so bad that it’s become a full-on notp for me. especially fanon pregame shit it’s fine to enjoy yandere dynamics or whatever but those literally aren’t even the same characters anymore. but i will never say that on main bc i enjoy not being mauled to death by hordes of angry shippers

I think a detail that has always made this scene way cuter and affectionate for me is the term Komaeda uses for "ultimate serenity" in the original version. komaeda refers to Hinata as the "super high school level iyashikei" iyashikei (癒し系) meaning soothing/healing type. While this doesn't make much of a difference from the translation, apart from making what Komaeda means by that more clear, it's what iyashikei entails that makes me love so much this little detail.
Iyashikei is defined as "people and things that make you feel calm and soothed when you are with them" and in more global anime circles it's also used to refer to a genre of anime characterized for it's calming qualities. For what I have investigated, it seems like the term had it's origins on the 2000s specifically on the idol subculture. While iyashikei isn't something inherently romantic, it's a term that is very commonly used in discussions about dating and romance, specially to refer to women. I find that this detail of the term being so common in discussions about romance and ideal partners accentuates a lot more the romantic tone and makes even more obvious the fact that Komaeda was flirting with Hinata.
Other thing about this that's very curious is the implications this has about how Komaeda perceives Hinata in the beginning. People who are described as "iyashikei" are usually described with characteristics like very calm, always smiling, soft, positive, cute and Hinata is usually not much like that, specially not at the beginning where he was so anxious and suspicious of everyone. It's extremely funny how Komaeda saw a man that was completely nothing alike of what people usually would find soothing or calming and he went like "Oh, definitely a calming type ♡" he really does see in him what nobody else does.
In the more complex side, it's very interesting how while is Komaeda the one who calls Hinata a healing type it seems like Hinata also sees Komaeda in that way, considering the dialogues about how looking at his smile soothes him and in general the way he talks about his presence. This only further confirms the belief that Hinata and Komaeda feel exactly the same about the other, even if they don't feel it at the same time. It's also interesting how Hinata is the one who gets described like that when Komaeda in the beginning acts more like the stereotypical iyashikei.
Generally when this particular entry of the report cards is mentioned is to mention how "accidentally" what Hinata says about Komaeda smile sounds very romantic even when the meant reading is Hinata being disturbed about Komaeda. While I understand why people would have this opinion, I wanted to briefly explain two reasons why the romanticism of this line is clearly intentional and why the line is not just about Hinata being confused and scared about him.
1. The use and subversion of an already established romantic line
One detail that is often never mentioned when discussing this line is that it is not the only instance where Hinata says something romantically charged about Komaeda's smile and how it's clearly meant to be some sort of callback and subversion of the first line. The first time Hinata says something like that it's used to show how calm Komaeda makes him feel and how much he likes his presence, and now Komaeda's smile is used to represent Hinata's confusion towards him and how all of the things that he used to perceive as well intentioned and kind are now perceived with a malicious intent by Hinata. The purpose of the line is to represent how Hinata's feelings for Komaeda have changed since the first free time event and to tell that even if Hinata is now angered and confused, the initial attraction he felt for him is still there.
It's also worth noting that the similarity between these two lines goes beyond just being about a smile. The structure of both of the sentences is not only similar, but the two smiles are described as carefree. Another detail that makes this scene more similar is that the adjective Hinata uses to say "calms me down" in the Japanese version is magireru (紛れる) while in this context it means to get distracted from your worries, magireru also means to get too absorbed in something or distracted, which is akin to the sensation of "looking at it and not understanding anything" that Hinata describes in the report card, which practically sounds like he gets too distracted and absorbed into his smile.
2. Clarifying the context of the line
When people discuss this line, it is usually only interpreted in a vacuum, hardly even considering the context of the free time event the report card is from. The most common interpretation of this line is that Hinata relates the concept of Komaeda smiling with him talking about his beliefs, so that's why Hinata can not understand a single thing of what he's talking about. This interpretation completely ignores the scene this line was referring to. The line in the report card is clearly referring to this part where Komaeda reassures Hinata with a smile, and Hinata questions the intention behind Komaeda doing this. The line in the report is most likely referring to this interaction since this is the only part of that free time event where Komaeda smiling is mentioned, and for the way it's written, it seems to be an interaction that should be taken into account. This part is clearly not talking about Hinata being disturbed or scared about Komaeda but it is trying to convey the confusion Hinata feels about Komaeda still being kind and friendly with him even when he's supposed to be a terrible person in his eyes.
