TERUTERU HANAMURA CHARACTER ANALYSIS

After weeks in his wiki, doing the equivalent of liking the now empty chocolate packaging, trying to consume every last bit of canon that I was denied by this game.

And with all that info, I wasn´t just going to keep all my especulation to myself!

So if you are (or aren´t) a Teruteru fan, I hope you have a good time with this character analysis!!

TERUTERU HANAMURA CHARACTER ANALYSIS

(Meme by konxhk)

ANALYSIS

Let’s begin with his relationship with his family. First his father.

From the in-game dialogue, Teruteru never mentioned his father, in one scene that he is talking about “his tragic backstory”, instead of talking about his whole family (siblings and both parents), the chef only mentions his mother, brother and sister:

TERUTERU HANAMURA CHARACTER ANALYSIS

The rise of family restaurants... Constant attacks by cheap chain joints... The bullying from a rival store... A grief-stricken mother...and frightened young siblings who were born to different mothers... To stop that crisis, I ventured alone and competed in a cooking deathmatch hosted by the Shogun of Taste... ...

This is widely interpreted in the fandom as his father not being present throughout his life. Which makes sense. But I don’t think that his parents were divorced though.

That’s because Teruteru said that he and his siblings only share the same father, and still, he talks about them very intensely. (This is the scene, in his second free time event, that he tells Hajime that his brother and sister are the Ultimate Male Escort and the Ultimate Female Escort, respectively)

TERUTERU HANAMURA CHARACTER ANALYSIS

Jeez...it's obvious they're just exploiting their youth to make a quick buck! So what if they make a hundred million annually or whatever...? That much money doesn't mean a thing...

TERUTERU HANAMURA CHARACTER ANALYSIS

That's right! Money isn't everything! You gotta think about the big picture! They think they're so great earning more money than me!

TERUTERU HANAMURA CHARACTER ANALYSIS

I don't know if he's worried about them or just jealous of them... It's difficult to tell.

I think that if someone has siblings,  but has never interacted with them, or doesn’t know who they are, and only that they’re related, one is not going to care about them… This leads me to believe, not only, that Teruteru knew his siblings in person, but was close to them and possibly lived with them!

This sibling situation is related to the father because, again, Teruteru was born to him and Mamamura, but his sister and brother were born to their father and another woman. This whole shenanigan must have happened while the father was still close enough to Mamamura that she would be willing to care for his children.

I think that Teruteru wouldn’t be aware of this whole situation.

~~~~~~~~~~~
But I feel it’s important to keep this context in mind. Especially when talking about, none other than THE Mamamura!
TERUTERU HANAMURA CHARACTER ANALYSIS
Poor woman had a lot going on.
Basically she had to alternate between dying from sickness and saving the family dinner from bankruptcy, working day and night, nonstop. And mind you, most of the time she was doing both at once. So you might imagine she didn’t have much time nor energy to care for her children, the opposite happened actually, she had to be cared for: as Teruteru said before his execution, he was the one that cared for his mother every time she felt sick.
~~~~~~~~~~~

With all of that in mind, here is how I believe that Hanamura family dynamic was like:

Mamamura was responsible for caring for 3 kids and the family diner, while dealing with a life threatening disease. Because Fathermura was never at home to help, she wasn’t able to look after her children, and was barely capable of handling the diner and her condition by herself.

Enter Teruteru, not only did he help his mom when she would pass out due to her disease, and was always present to help with the diner, but, as the older brother, Teruteru was the one taking care of his younger siblings, since Mamamura couldn’t do it.

I want to come back to the siblings for a little bit: throughout the Danganronpa series, we see that every Ultimate has always had a predestination for their talent, in other words, even before formally becoming an ultimate, the students already act like experts or prodigies in their field. Do you understand how this might be a problem for the Ultimate Escorts??? If Teruteru made some unnecessary comments sometimes, imagine what those gremlins were discussing at the dinner table. Add that to the fact that Teruteru was 24/7 with those kids growing up, and it instantly makes a lot more sense why Teruteru says such crude things in such a natural way! He is just using the vocabulary he used his entire life at home, the way of speaking he is comfortable with!

~~~~~~~~~~~
However, even though he says inappropriate stuff out of habit sometimes, that is not the only reason why he makes those comments. Teruteru acts like that because he is insecure!!! (I am NOT justifying the things he says, I’m just trying to explain the Y of things)
His insecurities:
In one of the free time dialogues, the chef tried talking about his life to Hajime. For me this dialogue line sounds like he tried to tell a dramatic story, but still based heavily on the truth, but he gave up mid way through. I think because of shame.
TERUTERU HANAMURA CHARACTER ANALYSIS
The rise of family restaurants... Constant attacks by cheap chain joints... The bullying from a rival store... A grief-stricken mother...and frightened young siblings who were born to different mothers... To stop that crisis, I ventured alone and competed in a cooking deathmatch hosted by the Shogun of Taste... ...
TERUTERU HANAMURA CHARACTER ANALYSIS
...Juuuust kidding. A dirty tale of hardship like that doesn't suit an attractive urbanite like me! You'd rather hear me talk about my splendid and glorious life as a first-rate chef, right? Right?
Teruteru also lies about being from Nishi-Azabu district in Minato, Tokyo, when he actually is from the countryside.
Teruteru hides his accent.
Teruteru hides the fact that his family’s restaurant is actually a diner. He said that it was a fancy restaurant at first, then the next time Hajime tried to talk about it, he quickly changed the  subject of the conversation.
“Ok, but how do those insecurities relate to him being a creep?” I hear you ask, dear reader. And the answer is: To call attention to himself. Let me explain:
Knowing that Teruteru doesn’t like WHO HE TRULY IS (aka, his personality + backstory), we can assume that he thinks that he isn’t enough, not enough to hold a conversation nor call attention. And how do you think he would call attention to himself????
TERUTERU HANAMURA CHARACTER ANALYSIS
(You don’t know how much I hate this sprite btw)
But this defense mechanism of his is extrapolated even more, if we pay attention. He also uses that strategy to PUSH PEOPLE AWAY.
When he feels someone is getting too close, or that he is too exposed, Teruteru might just lie (free time event 2), or he might throw out a sex “joke” to ruin the mood (in the free time event 6, for example). He doesn’t want people to really know him because he doesn’t like who he really is.
~~~~~~~~~~~

YAY!! That’s all I’ve got for Teruteru in regards to analysis!! But dont think this is the end of this adventure! I’ve decided to split this project: one post (this post) for the analysis, and another (future post) for rewriting him in game. Then we’ll have the character development we’ve been denied in game!! Don’t worry, I already have a wip, so it won’t be too long until the next part!

How about a solo post with Tenko and with a separate if possible Male and Female reader with a talent, personality and background as https://www.quotev.com/story/11974469/Danganronpa-Bunker-OPEN/30

For Female I'm thinking friends to lovers and for male one sided enemies to friends to lovers and I'm thinking for it to be agnst to fluff for him. I really hope that you have fun with this one

Ah I remember her~ And I did, in fact, have fun writing this

Link: 🍭Kayadi Sato-Ultimate Candyworker 🍭 | Danganronpa: Bunker ||OPEN|| (quotev.com)

Warnings: Mentions of bullying, physical violence in the male reader's part, implications of self-harm, reader's discretion advised

Tenko Chabashira and Male/Female Reader Who's Like Kayadi Sato (Danganronpa: Bunker)

Male Reader

She thought you were really annoying at first

Just how cheerful you were, the way you smiled at everyone and gave them a piece of candy

Especially when it was with her

You smiled at her and gave her a piece of candy every day, no matter how much she told you to piss off

For some reason, you seemed to be drawn to her

Even if she got pissed off every time you did it, you kept on coming back

But one day, she had enough and socked you in the face

Hard

You feel back onto the ground, and the way you looked at her with teary, fearful eyes made her felt something she had never felt toward a male

It was guilt

The way you looked scared shitless after she punched you and ran away immediately, she felt bad

But she wouldn't apologize. She couldn't

Even after that, you still came back

You still smiled at her and offered her a piece of candy

Even though you appeared shaky, and your smiles were obviously forced, you still tried to be nice

Tenko didn't even know what to do at this point

Why are you doing this to yourself?

Then she couldn't take it anymore

"What is wrong with you?! I punched you in the face, and you're still here bothering me? Do you do this with all people who've punched you in the face?"

To her complete and utter shock, you nodded

And you said something that felt like a punch to the heart

"If I give everyone a piece of candy, they'll always be nice. Even the mean people."

Then it all came together

You must've been treated like that in the past, so you figured the way to make them stop was making use of your talent

"So... People were mean to you?"

You nodded

"When I was younger, the other kids bullied me all the time. But I couldn't tell my parents because they were never home. It got a lot worse in middle school. One day, I went home, and my mom was crying, so I gave her a piece of candy. She said that if I treated everyone that way, they would leave me alone. So that's what I did."

Tenko listened in silence, feeling an overwhelming wave of guilt for ever making you feel that way

"Did it work?"

You shrugged

"It did back then. Kids love candy. My bullies became my best friends after that. Until we all stopped talking to each other, but I still kept giving candy to people. Even the mean ones."

Hearing this, Tenko felt tears in her eyes

Then she had a realization

You always wore long sweaters, and she realized something

She gestured to your sweater

"Um... Do you...?"

You picked up on what she was saying, and your expression grew solemn

"Yeah. I'm careful not to bleed, but they do leave scars. That's why I wear these."

Tenko had heard enough, and she pulled you close to her in a hug, silently crying

"I'm sorry.... I'm so sorry I was so awful to you."

You stiffened in shock, but you returned the affection

You weren't sure what it was, but you felt something in your eyes

Were they... Tears?

No, couldn't be. You never cried

But that changed as you felt the odd liquid running down your face

You felt pathetic, but Tenko tightened her hold, silently telling you that it was okay

So for the first time in years, you gave in to your emotions, and Tenko supported you all the while

After that, you went from Tenko's worst enemy to one of her favorite people ever

You made a real friend, and you didn't even need candy to do it

Tenko helped you to stand up for yourself when people were mean to you

Handing out candy was all fine and good when they were your friends, but she wants you to break your long-lasting, toxic tradition

Even though you knew it wasn't healthy, it was difficult

But with Tenko's help, you slowly managed to do it

And you helped her out, too

Tenko extended her protection of females to you, and you helped her rethink her stand on men

Even though you started off rocky, you and Tenko found a friend in each other

And maybe one day, your relationship could go farther than just friendship

Female Reader

She thought you were the sweetest thing ever

When you first approached her, she smiled widely and hugged you

She couldn't stop gushing over how adorable you were

She wanted to be your friend right off the bat, which delighted you

It wasn't even because you handed out candy, just because you were an amazing person

She basically becomes your personal bodyguard right then and there

She wants to make sure nobody takes advantage of your kindness

Sometimes people did, and she handled them accordingly

And by accordingly, I mean based on their genders-

Tenko often wondered why you always wore long sweaters, even in 90-degree weather

But she never asked

One day, she was roaming around outside the school, and she noticed you and a group of boys

Tenko was immediately on high alert, and hung out behind a tree

You were offering candy to them, like you always did

But they were laughing and saying awful things to you

One thing led to another, and one of them pushed you

Even then, you reached for your bag to pull out candy

Tenko had enough, and she was seeing red as she stomped over to them

Before one of them could land a punch on you, she knocked the boys on their asses and chased them away

Then she carefully helped you up, worriedly asking if you alright

You confirmed that you were, and that you only had a small scrape on your knee

But she still brought you to the nurse to get it looked at

When you left, Tenko still insisted on staying at your side

While you were talking a walk in the park together, she was angrily ranting about the boys

"Bunch of degenerate males... Who do they think they are, touching a girl like that?! And you were still gonna give them candy?! Why?!"

You shrugged your shoulders

"When I give people candy, they're always nice to me."

She looked at you in shock

"Not when they're bullies! Especially when they're degenerate males! You can't just give them candy while they're trying to pound your face in!"

You tilted your head

"Why not? It worked when I was younger."

Tenko immediately stopped walking and faced you with a look of pure shock

"When you were younger?" She echoed

You nodded

"Yeah. I got bullied a lot when I was younger. Especially in middle school. But my parents were never home when I got back, so I couldn't say anything. One day, I saw my mom crying, so I gave her some candy to make her feel better. It worked a little bit, and she said that if I did that with everyone, they'll leave me alone."

Tenko looked at you sadly, and she brought you a nearby bench to sit down

"So you started being all nice to people so they would be nice to you?"

You nodded

"Yeah, and it worked. My bullies became my best friends. And even when we stopped talking, I kept handing out candy, and I made more friends. People were still mean to me sometimes, but when I gave them candy, they would stop."

Tenko felt her eyes watering

Now she had an idea as to why you wore your long sweaters

"So... About your sweaters... Is it because you...?"

You nodded

"Yeah. They don't bleed, but they do scar, which is why I wear them."

Tenko couldn't take anymore, and pulled you close to her in a hug

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry you went through that."

You stiffened, but accepted the gesture nonetheless

And it appeared that Tenko's emotional nature was contagious, because you felt your eyes watering as well

You tried to force them back, but they came pouring out

Tenko rubbed your back gently, letting you know that it was okay

And you sat together, letting out your emotions for the first time in years

After that, Tenko's protectiveness of you increased

The second someone tried to take advantage of you, she took your hand and pulled you away from them immediately

She never left your side, not once

She didn't like that you were still so kind to people, but she knew it was just who you were

She does draw the line at mean people, though

You soon became her favorite person in the whole world, and she protected you with her whole heart

It didn't take long for her to develop feelings for you

When she did, she confessed to you, and you accepted

And your relationship only grew stronger from there

Aoi Asahina Apologizing to her S/O After the Fourth Trial

I've always enjoyed this prompt, and decided to put my own spin on it :3

Warnings: Spoilers for Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

You stood in silence as you rode the elevator back to the first floor.

Nobody was doing or saying anything, and the tension is strong.

You knew Aoi was upset about Sakura's death, and she had every right to be. After all, they were best friends, and whenever Aoi wasn't with you, she was with her.

You tried to comfort her and had offered your support, but she insisted to be fine with a clearly forced smile.

You finally understood why she was acting so strange, since she messed with the crime scene to throw suspicion everywhere during the class trial, and get you all to cast the wrong votes, all because she wanted everyone to pay for "killing" Sakura.

You couldn't help but feel hurt. You never had any issues with Sakura, even after she was revealed as the traitor. And yet Aoi didn't think twice to try to execute you along with the others.

You weren't just hurt, you felt betrayed. Even though she apologized to everyone, it still didn't feel right.

You made it to the dorms, and you turned to look at Hina. She looked at you guiltily and slowly walked over to you and hugged you.

You wanted to enjoy the affection as you always did, but knowing what she did, it felt empty. You placed your hands on her shoulders and gently pulled her off of you before entering your dorm and closing the door.

You didn't sleep that night. There was too much on your mind and you stayed awake for long, miserable hours. It didn't help that Aoi wasn't there, cuddled up to your chest like normal.

The next morning, you saw Makoto in the hallway before heading to the dining hall. He gave you a sympathetic look and approached you.

"Hey. Are you okay?" He asked. You nodded.

"I will be." He nodded in understanding and pulled you into a hug to comfort you. You two had always been close, almost like Aoi and Sakura were. He gave you a boost of hope every time you talked, and it always made you feel so much better about the situation.

After you pulled away, you walked together to the dining hall. You saw Hina sitting at one of the tables, and she gave you a bright smile. You ignored it and sat at a different table with Makoto. You looked down at the table and Makoto gently pat your back.

Like always, you made plans to investigate the fifth floor, and after everyone left, Makoto offered to investigate with you, but you kindly refused, saying that you needed some time alone. And with that, you all went your separate ways and investigated the fifth floor.

In the hallways, you ran into Kyoko.

"Hello, (Name)." She greeted.

"Hey," you responded half-heartedly.

"Why don't we take a walk? There are some interesting spots on this floor, and I'm sure you wouldn't want to miss out."

You wanted to refuse, but at this point, you were just going along with whatever. So you joined her as you investigated. Kyoko seemed unusually chatty, asking questions and talking to you about what she's found. Instead of having to work for it, she was making conversation for you. It seemed like she wanted to take your mind off of things, and it kind of worked.

At some point, she stopped in the hallway and turned to look at you.

"I know you're still thinking about the trial. About what Hina did."

"How could I not? She tried to kill me," you muttered bitterly.

"You have a right to be upset. Hina had a lapse in judgement, and she acted without thinking. But avoiding her isn't going to fix it. All it's doing is hurting you."

"Yeah, but how am I supposed to even talk to her after what she did? I can hardly even look her in the eyes without feeling hurt."

Kyoko thought for a moment before looking back to you.

"Do you still want things to work out between the two of you?"

"Well, yeah. Of course I do. I love her. It's just that-"

"Then that should be all you need. I can see that Hina wants to make things work as well. But it's not going to work if you don't try."

You looked away. You knew that she was right. Nothing would get solved if you didn't talk to Aoi. But something in you made you hesitate. Kyoko seemed to sense how you were feeling and looked at you.

"I know it's hard. But if you truly love her, you should talk to her. By the end of it, you can decide if you want to make things work or not. I know you can do it."

She gives you an encouraging smile before leaving the hallway. You thought over what she said. It's true, you really did love Aoi. And you did want to make it work.

With that in mind, you decided to talk to her.

30 minutes before nighttime, you heard a knock on your door. You opened it, and Aoi was standing on the other side, holding a box of donuts. She avoided your gaze, and shifted her weight onto one foot anxiously.

"Hi. Um... Can I come in?"

You silently moved to the side and allowed her to enter. She placed the donuts on the table and sat down on the bed.

"Thanks for inviting me over. I hated not talking to you."

"Yeah. Do you think you can talk first? I can't find the words yet." You asked, and her expression turned guilty.

"I'm really sorry for what I did at the class trial. I was just upset, and grieving, and... I just wasn't thinking." You spun around to look at her.

"Exactly. You weren't thinking. You didn't think about what would happen to me, or any of our friends. I didn't have any problems with Sakura, you know. Makoto didn't, Kyoko didn't. But just because Byakuya and Toko said some nasty things about her, you allowed that to guide your decision. Do you even care about us at all? About me?"

The words began pouring out as your voice was right below shouting. Now the anger you felt was shining through.

"Of course I do! I was just being dumb and letting my emotions guide me, and..."

She let out a soft sigh of resignation.

"...You're right. I wasn't thinking about you, or our friends. I was just so mad at them that I wanted to punish them. And myself, for not noticing what she was going through. But she's dead, and the trial is over. There's nothing I can do to change those things."

You felt your features soften as you looked at her. You couldn't help but feel bad for her. Perhaps you hadn't checked on her enough, and maybe if you did, she wouldn't have acted out. Maybe this was your fault too.

But she continued, causing you to snap out of her thoughts.

"But I really am sorry for what I did. I don't have an excuse. I was just really upset. You have every right to be mad at me, but I hope that you don't-"

You cut her off by hugging her, causing her to stiffen up in surprise.

"It's alright. I'm sorry too. Maybe if I checked in on you more instead of just focusing on the investigation, I would've understood your feelings, and you wouldn't have done it. I promise I'll be more attentive in the future."

"So... You don't hate me then?" She asked, and you pulled away to hold her face in your hands.

"Of course not. I could never."

You leaned in and planted a soft kiss on her lips, and she placed her hands on your shoulders and closed her eyes. This was the closest you've been since the trial, and you could feel how much you missed each other.

After you pulled away, you smiled at each other, and Aoi leaned against you as you held her close. Then, you shared some of her donuts before going to sleep.

Kyoko was right. You did make it work.

You know, I think Maki actually does feel guilty about Kokichi's death.

Yes, by Ch.5 she absolutely hated him, but it was understandable. He declared himself the mastermind — person who supposedly kidnapped forced everyone to kill each other. He took Kaito — the most important person for Maki in this game — hostage. He mocked Gonta after his death. He told everyone that he enjoyed their suffering, laughing like madman. Throughout all the game, he accused and insulted Maki of being an assassin. And finally, the last straw was the fake memories that he also helped Junko start wars and cause destruction. This all led to her snapping and trying to kill him.

And Maki never enjoyed killing. She was forced to become an assassin and only stayed for the safety and wellbeing of children in the orphanage she grew up in. She really wanted to prove the group. that she could be trusted. She even told this to Kokichi after the 3rd trial.

Yes, at the end of the fifth trial she told Kaito that he shouldn't have agreed to Kokichi's plan and it would have been better for Ouma to just die. But at that moment she was desperate, hurt and scared that Kaito would be executed. Naturally she would be mad at Kokichi.

But in Chapter 6, she was the one who volunteered to search Kokichi's room to find any clues that could help end the game. If she didn't care at all, she would not offer to search there. I think part of her also wanted to find some kind of confirmation that he really was an asshole who absolutely deserved to die. Or, on the contrary, confirmation that he really did try to help them. Just anything to form her own final opinion about him.

And also that moment during the Final Trial when Tsumugi, the real Mastermind, revealed that those memories, that finally pushed her to try to kill him, weren't real. Maki sounds shocked and horrified at that. Because those memories were the reason that pushed her to try to murder him. And if they were fake, that means she did all that for nothing. She broke her unspoken promise to Kaito, and that resulted in Momota and Ouma both dying. And all of it was because of a lie.

It feels to me that she does feel guilty for both Kaito's death and Kokichi's death, because it was her actions that partially led to everything ending that way. I think no matter how she feels about Kokichi, she regrets what she did.
