My friends and I were talking about dating and our favorite parts of dating, and I said my favorite part is holding hands. I love holding hands. Okay, so think about this: We do everything with our hands. We create with our hands. We write. We draw. We sculpt. We talk with our hands. We wave. We gesture. We give thumbs up. We do simple things with our hands, and we do great things with our hands. We use our hands for everything. Our hands are like our whole world. And despite everything and anything we could do with our hands, we choose to hold each other. Like, when I hold your hand, I’m saying, “You are the most important thing right now. My world is yours and your world is mine.” Hands are so cool. We should hold hands more.

I’m rereading Prisoner of Azkaban and the trio visit Hagrid after Buckbeak injured Malfoy. After Hagrid calms down, he finally notices that Harry is indeed there, when he’s not supposed to be out after dark because of the threat of Sirius looming and he says this:
“C’mon!” Hagrid said angrily. “I’m takin’ yer all back up ter school, an’ don’ let me catch yeh walkin’ down ter see me after dark again. I’m not worth that!”
That last sentence really got to me, because here you have Hagrid, such a kind, gentle, loving soul, willing to give anything and anyone a chance, inherently assuming that all animals (ferocious or not) are worthy of love and nurture, and he says he’s not worth the effort and the risk. Not even when he’s going through a difficult time and could use support and comfort. And I just want to hug him so badly, because damn, he’s worth SO much.
White people: if you want to help long term: get used to being told your opinion is wrong, irrelevant, or unwanted. Tell your friends to get used to it. Work on getting used to it and do this work with other white people. Because white supremacy has all of y’all very used to being right and being an inherently valued voice and if we’re going to fight white supremacy you’re going to have to be comfortable surrendering that expectation and also white people will need to learn how to handle being rejected or disagreed with. It’s an extension of racism and racial trauma for black people to try and educate or speak up about our issues only to expose ourselves to your white fragility which makes you defensive– this defensiveness can look like shutting down, silencing us, painting all corrections or disagreements as ‘fighs’ (extending the idea that black people are aggressive) etc.
White resilience is the opposite of white fragility and black people are VERY good at resilience, unfortunately. Listen to us we know how to combat this.
Me: I’m having such a hard time, can y’all please go easy on me?
