Our engineers and scientists create all sorts of materials and coatings—in fact, it is one of the most licensed technology categories in our patent portfolio. From materials that improve industrial and household products, to coatings and insulations that protect satellites, machinery and firefighters, our technologies offer smart solutions for modern challenges.
These are a few of our most in-demand technologies.
Made by innovators at our Langley Research Center, this tech was first created for exploring dusty, dirty surfaces like the Moon, Mars and asteroids. Lunar dust has been shown to cause big problems with mechanical equipment, like clogging filters and damaging seals. This technology can be used in the production of films, coatings and surface treatments to create dust-resistant and self-cleaning products for biomedical devices, aircraft, cars and much more. This tech could be a game-changer when battling dirt and grime.
Looking for a technology to ward off corrosion that’s also safe for the environment? Developed to protect our launch pads at Kennedy Space Center from extreme heat and exhaust from rockets, this “smart” coating can detect and prevent corrosion. It can even be painted on damaged surfaces to heal and protect them going forward. This tech has commercial potential in building safer bridges, automobiles and machinery. While it may seem like magic, this technology will reduce maintenance cost and improve safety.
Made to protect astronauts and vehicles during the dangerously hot task of reentry, scientists at Langley developed a flexible, lightweight and portable thermal protection system that can serve as a personal emergency fire shelter.
The flexible technology is made up of multilayer thermal blankets designed to handle external temperatures of up to 2,000°F – that’s as hot as magma found in some volcanos! The system can be formed as a sleeping bag, a tent, a blanket, a curtain, a flexible roll-up doorway or even for fire protection in housing structures.
This award-winning tech was initially developed by researchers at our Marshall Space Flight Center to help reduce vehicle exhaust emissions. This special alloy is flexible and strong—even at temperatures of over 500°F. That means it can withstand more wear and tear than other similar materials. Currently, this tech can be found improving motors on fishing boats as well as in all kinds of different engines.
Not all lubricants are liquids, for example, the non-stick coating on a frying pan. Truly in a class of its own, innovators at our Glenn Research Center have created solid lubricant materials to reduce friction and wear in mechanical parts, especially in extremely high heat. This tech could be useful in large engines, valves, turbines and power generation.
We needed a better material than iron or steel to prevent corrosion and rust in the International Space Station’s wastewater treatment system. Enter: our high-strength, super elastic compounds. Shock-proof, lightweight, durable and immune to rust, this durable tech has applications in ships, machines, industrial knives and cutters, and engine bearings here on Earth. They also don’t chemically degrade or break down lubricants, a common problem with existing bearing materials.

Slagelse Viking Fortress, 980 AD, still standing.
Trelleborg, a Viking ring fortress west of Slagelse on the Danish island of Zealand, is one of only seven known similar structures. In its day, the fortress was situated on a peninsula that jutted into the swampy area between two rivers. The swamp was connected to the Great Belt by a lake that could be navigated by Viking ships. Trelleborg is believed to have been ordered built by King Harald Bluetooth in the year 980 AD and it might have commanded the Great Belt and its sea traffic, between the islands of Zealand and Funen.

Trees are critical. Two hundred years ago, Haiti’s mountainous slopes were covered with dense forests, tropical hardwoods, fruit trees, and valuable crops. Since then, tree cover has decreased to ~30%. This massive deforestation is the result of a complex interplay of historic, economic, social, and ecological factors. These factors have caused drought and famine in one part of the world while causing environmental degradation in another.

It is in response to the strain on local agriculture and the dramatic loss of tree cover in Haiti that we have created Haiti Takes Root. HTR is a unique public-private coalition led by the Government of Haiti, whose goal is to reverse over 200 years of deforestation in-country. J/P HRO is a founding member of this coalition comprised of the Government of France, World Bank, and Parker Foundation. We believe that re-greening Haiti will take massive injection of new resources, more efficient programming, and research that brings innovative practices to the economic, energy, and environment sectors.
How are we helping?
We are partnering with ACCESO on farmer relief packages and sustainable agroforestry. ACCESO’s model is unique because farmers receiving material and technical support also receive a guarantee from ACCESO to buy their crops. The link between immediate relief and long-term sustainability - a focus for J/P - is thus clear.
The project will begin with an initial integration with Cavaillon, where we will co-finance:
a tree nursery/anchor farm;
the distribution of approximately 300 “farmer relief kits” containing seeds, seedlings, and tools; and,
provide farmer extension services and guaranteed purchase of crops over a 5-year period.
In partnership with American Red Cross we are working on urban planning and community mobilization for an urban greening initiative. After the 2010 earthquake, a spontaneous settlement emerged in Canaan and has since grown to become the fourth-largest city in Haiti with a population over 300,000. Two main activities were implemented as part of this objective of the project
The design, construction, and supervision of green public spaces.
The training and mobilization of Urban population on tree planting and protection.

Preservation of critical protected areas
Reduction in use of unsustainable charcoal and firewood
With increased public and private partnerships, more efficient programming, and increased productivity of reforestation efforts, we will improve climate resilience, reduce environmental degradation, and increase rural livelihoods.

A technology that functions like a brain? In these times of artificial intelligence, this no longer seems so far-fetched – for example, when a mobile phone can recognise faces or languages. With more complex applications, however, computers still quickly come up against their own limitations. One of the reasons for this is that a computer traditionally has separate memory and processor units – the consequence of which is that all data have to be sent back and forth between the two. In this respect, the human brain is way ahead of even the most modern computers because it processes and stores information in the same place – in the synapses, or connections between neurons, of which there are a million-billion in the brain. An international team of researchers from the Universities of Münster (Germany), Oxford and Exeter (both UK) have now succeeded in developing a piece of hardware which could pave the way for creating computers which resemble the human brain. The scientists managed to produce a chip containing a network of artificial neurons that works with light and can imitate the behaviour of neurons and their synapses.
