Altars are a hub of your magickal energy. A lot of witches perform spells there, seeing it as a source of valuable energy. It is also a place of worship if you have patron deities. For worshippers, this is where you would communicate and give offerings to said deities. This is also a wonderful space to charge and store your magickal tools. Altars are not a witchcraft-specific object, either- most christian churches have Altars dedicated to Jesus Christ as well!
Anything that you use for any of the above can be considered an Altar. I use a bookcase as an altar but it can be anything from a table to an entire room to something as small as a suitcase or even an altoid can- something used commonly among closeted witches as it is not easily found or recognized by loved ones who might be so pleased with the concept of Witchcraft.
You can decorate it in any way you like! An altar, like the Craft in itself, is an extremely personal concept. However, here are various common ways I have seen some being decorated:
To honor their ancestors
To celebrate the seasons
To celebrate holidays such as Ostara or Yule
To honor their deities
Minimalist, having only their supplies and tools with it
To Honor Your Ancestors
Give Offerings of their favorite foods
Decorate it in their favorite colors
Have pictures of them on it
Leave letters addressed to them on the Altar, sending your love and appreciation to them wherever they may be in the afterlife.
To Celebrate the Seasons
Spring- decorate in bright colors such as yellow and pinks; regularly have flowers (real or fake) on or near it; dedicate your Altar to your patron fertility/life/nature deity
Summer- decorate in bold colors such as reds and greens; leave plants such as cacti or produce plants like tomato plants on or near it; leave offerings of fresh (preferably local and in-season) plants on it; dedicate your Altar to your patron god of passion/sun/hard-work
Fall- decorate in muted and comforting colors such as browns and oranges; leave offerings of wheat/cinnamon/squash; leave a small letter addressed to your late loved ones in this time of thinned veil; dedicated your Altar to your patron god of harvest.
Winter- decorate in colors such as whites or blues or even black; leave sprigs of evergreen tree needles or cones near or on it; dedicate it to your patron god of death or life cycles
To Celebrate the Holidays
Samhain- In this time of the thinnest veil, you would want to decorate your altar in a way similar to the way you would in honor of your ancestors. See above for ideas regarding that.
Yule- Leave an (artificial) burning yule log on it, have sun imagery to celebrate the return of the sun
Imbolc- Leave a burning candle (or an artificial candle on) on your altar all day; decorate with a bundle of wheat, a pomegranate, or other symbolism of fertility
Ostara- Decorate with jasper or incense for jasmine or any other floral scent; leave offerings of food; if possible, move it in front of the sun
Beltane- Decorate with phallic decorations; leave items on it that bring great joy to your life, leave a candle of an earthy smell burning
Litha- Decorate with imagery of the moon to welcome the growing darkness; leave it in dark colors for the same reason; similar to Imbolc, display symbols of fertility
Lammas- Decorate in Fall-themed colors; Leave an offering of (preferably home-made) bread
Mabon- Decorate your Altar in items and symbols of things that you are grateful for; leave a letter of thanks to your deity; cover in colors of transition such as orange-red, grays, blue-green, etc.
To Honor your Deities
Cover your altar in their patron colors
Display symbolism of their domain (for ex. A bowl of salt-water if they are over the Sea)
If their worship permits, display a portrait or artistic rendition of them! Feel free to do this yourself, no matter how you gauge your artistic abilities. I’ve even seen people represent gods with dressed-up dolls or barbies
Light an incense in a smell that reminds you of them
The Minimalist Approach
Typically these kinds of altars hold simply the tools of the trade and representations of the elements (none of this is mandatory ever and you should follow your gut with what is necessary for you):
Incense to represent air
Candles or light to represent fire
A bowl of water to represent… well… water
A bowl of salt to represent Earth
Athame
Candles
Crystals
Wand
Hey Guys! I made some more printable reference sheets for y’all! You can download them along with my other reference sheets and printables here. Hanging rosemary above the doorstep, and/or above doors of the house for protection.
Sprinkling a line of dried red pepper on a windowsill, to counter a curse.
Placing a mix of dried & ground eggshells and black pepper in every corner of a room to keep out unwanted spirits.
Placing a decoration representing a witch in the kitchen, to keep away illness and to favor health.
Crafting an effigie (no matter how crude!) and make it into the guardian of your home by charging it with your intent of protection by placing it near the front door.
Crafting small witch ladders to hang around the house.
Beltane Celebration
Hi lovely ones! We know it’s super late but we have been working hard on new surprises you will like a lot! We promise! But for now, here’s the Beltane Spell Celebration of this month.
You will need previous Moon Water already made and you will pour it carefully inside a clear vase of your choice. After this step is done, light up the white candle and think of the elements in front of you. Make a silent wish.
Now place the flowers inside the vase while making a blessing to someone or something for each flower you put. Once it’s all done, please take a moment to think about the meaning of this celebration time. Of How it’s related to have fun, fertility, abundance, romance, celebration and protection.
If you are ok with it, you can also offer these to the faeries around your home and expect magical energies through all the month.
I made a career/job spell jar
Jar:
Basil- money, success
Mint- luck, money, prosperity
Bay leaf- wish, motivation, success
Coffee- grounding, protection, energy
Fennel seed- money, strength, protection
Mustard- courage, faith, success, luck
Parsley- money, luck, success
Rosemary- focus
Sesame seed- money
Sugar- drawing, attraction
Carnation- protection, strength, energy, luck
Pieces of my cats claws that I found around the house- my own intention of "climb to the top"
Candle Wax Seal:
Green- money, prosperity, luck
Orange- ambition, creativity, attraction
Red- ambition, passion
Btw the candle holders aren't glass. I read somewhere that it can explode with heat. I forget what they're made from but I bought it on Amazon and they're not supposed to explode.
This is by far the most abundant ink I have in my house is that of inks made from flowers. This is the easiest and fastest inks to be made and require the least amount of materials to produce brilliant and soft colors. The inks from flowers can be either stunning and dark, or a lighter and more pale like one would expect from watercolor. Flower inks don’t last as long as inks produced from berries or nuts, and being left in the sunlight will fade their colors faster, but since this ink is so fast and easy to make, it can always be in supply. The shelf life of this ink is about a month if kept in the dark, but this is dependent on the color itself.
Materials:
Glass containers (preferably mason jars or drinking cups)
A pestle or other wooden tool (to crush the flowers with)
Boiling water
Cheese cloth
Rubbing Alcohol or 100 Proof Vodka
Glass storage container
Optional: Gum Arabic
Steps:
First, gather the flower petals of choice for the color desired (note some flower ink isn’t the same color as the flower petals).
Take these petals and crush them into the glass container, stuffing as many as you can in 1/3rd of the container as possible. The more crushed the petals, the more color will come out.
Fill the container with just enough boiling water to barely cover the flower petals. Do not fill the container, as this will dull the ink.
Set this container aside to brew overnight (I actually leave mine in the window to brew for 24 hours).
Strain the flower petals from the liquid, pouring the colored ink into a clean glass storage container.
Add 1 part alcohol to the container and shake gently (do not shake hard enough to form bubbles).
Optional: You may add Gum Arabic to give the ink a thicker consistency.
A recommendations on flowers, I have found that roses and other soft petaled flowers make a stronger ink.
Money spell! Reblog to charge it with your intent; the more people see it, the more powerful it becomes. Magic should be fun!

If you’re a new witch, you probably aren’t too sure where to start.
“Which path should I follow?” “Do I have to be wiccan to be a witch?” “When can I join a coven?” “What should I learn first?” “Can I be a witch if I’m a guy?”
First of all, we’ve all been there, so don’t worry. This is a journey we all take. Witchcraft is what you make it.
You absolutely DON’T have to be religious to be a witch. I personally am an athiest, so I don’t involve any deities in my craft, however many people do. Witchcraft as it is, is entirely separate to religion, however lots of people choose to practice the two together.
You DON’T have to be female to be a witch. Anyone who says that is a liar, or misinformed. Your gender doesn’t impact your craft unless you want it too, and if you wish you can even omit all gendered associations from your craft, as I myself do.
There are also arguments surrounding the word “witch”, so to clear it up, the word “witch” itself is gender neutral, so you have the right to identify with that word, regardless of your gender.
There are many paths a witch can follow, however lots of modern witches are eclectic (take parts from different paths) and wish to have their own tailored path. As an eclectic witch myself, I can’t tell you too much about paths, however there are many pages on the internet that can help you. None of these paths are wrong to follow, and we all have different interpretations.
Once again, you don’t need to be part of a coven to be a witch. Many people choose to be part of them, however many people choose to be solitary. Being a solitary witch does not exclude you from talking to other witches, or working with other witches from time to time. There are many places for witches to socialise, both on the internet and in person. If you are concerned about learning without a coven, then I would advise you to look into discord. Although most are not covens, there are several witchy servers there, and many are happy to help new witches.
I hope that this has helped answer some of the questions new witches have. This is just the first post in a series, so there are definetely more to lookout for. I wish you the best luck with your craft, and feel free to ask any questions in the comments.
