I think the most entertaining thing about my mom reading tgcf is that throughout the book she's been giving me her thoughts, and, especially during the plague and fall of Xianle, she sounds so much like the nameless people who judge Xie Lian for his actions. Granted, she's nicer about it, but it's still interesting.

In looking at Xie Lians actions during that time, I think she forgot that Xie Lian was a child when he was forced to pick between watching them suffer or attempting to help and save his people. Then I saw her comparing it to Hua Chengs maturity when he was little, and it so goddamn interesting. She compared Xie Lian immaturity at a young age to Hua Chengs maturity at a young age, and judged Xie Lian for it, because as a crown prince she had the expectation that he would and should be mature too. I feel like she forgot that he was 17, he was supposed to be immature and young and stupid, he was a well loved child with a good upbringing. He was a child and was allowed to act like one. In short, I find it very interesting that I saw everything MXTX put in there about a society that disapproves of children being children and really act their age, and am watching my mom fall into that very pattern. It's so interesting and I can't wait till she gets to read about the last bit of Xie Lians past cause I might dump this all on her when we do our little deepdive discussion about it lmao I'll update yall on the aftermath.

Atsushi getting phantom pain from injuries that no longer exist.

Because Atsushi's ability has allowed him to survive, but never has it let him heal.

He's woken up and screamed grasping what should be a stump but is his leg.

He knows where every single scar should be. He's felt every stab, every burn even if only one actual scar remains.

Atsushi's foot hurts and he can feel the cool metal of the hammer in his hand like it's mocking him.

It's worse after Shibusawa, Atsushi can feel electricity dance across his skin and chokes back a sob. It's like he's burning from the inside out but he just smiles.

Atsushi who's asked what hurts and he just laughs because it's everywhere, all the time.

Because the mental ghosts of his past won't leave Atsushi alone, so why would the physical ones?

I feel like there's untapped skk angst. Like dazai purposefully caused the rift between the Sheep and by proxy the betrayal. Like I need those two getting into an actual fucking argument as those old wounds reopen before they say they love each other.

I mean they'll still wanna punch eachother during their relationship BUT with slightly less genuine hate towards each other.

Atsushi helps Chuuya clean the motorcycle

They get some tea on rice, chazuke?

And Atsushi unintentionally followed Chuuya to the Mafia HC to which when he turned into a tiger alone with Chuuya, Chuuya treated him with the respect he ever rarely got when he was younger and now Chuuya just has a "pet" tiger and was just accepted as a respected member of the mafia

The mafia recognizes that they should not do anything to the tiger or Atsushi

Atsushi and Chuuya become close and at some point Atsushi meets Kenji and they become friends as well

Atsushi thought at some point it was okay to introduce Kenji to Chuuya

And thus forming a friendship circle of three people lol

Kenji: so Atsushi is my friend and your friend...

Chuuya: yea??

Kenji: We shall be friends!!

Chuuya: *smiles* then we shall kiddo

Atsushi: *smiles*

I like to think that Chuuya understands why Dazai left and wasn't all that mad about it at first.

I think the hurt of being left built up over the four years. I think the first week or so Chuuya was like "Yeah? Well good for him I guess, better be quieter around now" and then he turns to tell Dazai something on a mission and he's not there. Of course he shrugs it off, no big deal he just need s a brief adjustment period. Shouldn't take long I mean how much can one person really affect your life?

And then he finds himself looking for Dazai to ask the name of the musical that has that one song. It got stuck in his head. Again. And it's annoying him and he makes it all the way to his living room before remembering Dazai's not there.

And then he sees the lump of Dazai's clothes on the couch and goes to tell him to at least put it away and he opens his mouth before remembers.

And then he makes food and when he's setting up his plate he notices he made enough for two. He won't admit it but he's not sure if that shit will remember to feed himself.

And then he's still buying the shampoo and conditioner Dazai likes. Not Chuuya's problem anymore, he thinks as he puts them away. Better to stalk up in case it's needed later.

And then he's still leaving Dazai's favorite blanket on the couch, he's still keeping bandages in his bathroom, still driving by the river to make sure there aren't any limbs sticking out, still watching the movies Dazai showed him and he wouldn't tell anyone but Dazai being gone affected everything and he's happy for him- really but if he ever sees him again he better have been just as fucked up.

And then he sees Dazai again, four years later on the day he came back from a mission. And he looks. Fine. Better than his Mafia days, better than when he was with Chuuya. Lucky him.

Genuine question…why would YOU read a whole ass novel about Hua Cheng and Xie Lian if you hate HuaLian as a couple?Just why?I mean I know that there is a lot more to the novel because I do LOVE a lot of things about it besides HuaLian but still…if you against their love why did you read it? :D
