i have a little question. Would you rather reffer to Ink as a ''soulless being" or 'person who lacks a soul"? (saw this discussion a while ago and apparently there's a different with both terms)

This is weirdly timed due to me working on a video talking about what Ink’s soulless identity could be metaphors for…nice job anon /gen

I have a small section about this in my video, but I won’t mind adding it here and expanding on it. The only reference we have of a monster who is soulless is Flowey, but what most people tend to forget about Flowey is that the reason he is who is he is due to the determination inside him as well. Unlike Ink who is capable of feeling genuine emotions, even if they are technically artificial, Flowey feels nothing but animal instincts and a drive to survive. I see some people say Flowey CAN feel some emotions, and while I want to agree with that, it’s clear this is through an animalistic way. Flowey “feels’ fear when his life is threatened. He cries when the last bits of his good memories, the memories his determination latched onto, are brought up due to the influence they have over his remains. He doesn’t truly feel things like love or empathy, so he fits the criteria of a ‘soulless being’ a lot better.

Where the problem had risen in the fandom is people using their knowledge of how Flowey acts for a baseline of what Ink is like- using terms like “soulless being” to describe him and making him cruel and overly rude. It’s confirmed that Ink is a selfish prick, but it’s also confirmed he CAN feel love, and feels love for his dads. He can also mourn and feel genuine connections to people due to his vials and the lack of determination serving as metaphoric survival instincts. He CAN love, and he can cry over losing someone. That requires empathy and compassion- and due to his vials serving as his soul, he’s still a person.

Flowey is more of a vengeance spirit in a way- haunting the narrative until Frisk holds him through his turmoil and reveals the soul of Asriel. Though it’s hinted he will become Flowey again, I like to think that Asriel REALLY means that his soul can move on, and Flowey will be all that remains, which will be an empty flower. Without his soul and lasting strings, nothing can hold Flowey together. That’s not exactly the means of a person- just fragments stitched together by determination and past memories.

Ink is a person- even if everyone and himself doubt it. He has the capability of care and love and has a drive that isn’t just connected to survival. He’s able to maintain positive connections and make enemies at the same time, upholding both in a way that’s reminiscent to others. Even without his soul, his vials are his support- almost like how people get mechanical legs after losing one. They are foreign and not in the shape of a soul at all, but they were given to him as a replacement and to keep him going. They will never be on the same par of an original soul, but they hold him together anyways. That’s the structure of a person who just seems to have a disability- not a completely separate being.

TLDR: I think the term a person without a soul fits- however, basing Ink off of the one other soulless character we know of (even though he isn’t a good comparison due to the immense differences between them and their situations) is what drove so much of his mischaracterization throughout the years, and we need to remember Ink had a artificial soul in a way and shouldn’t be considered a completely soulless and empty person when he has things to support him.

This is basically my first ever drawing with my new drawing tablet and not my fingers. It is very hard to draw with the tablet but I need to practice.

I really hate when fics try to demonize Dream just to make Nightmare look better. If we're talking actual corrupted Nightmare, he really ain't someone to uplift over him. The opposite trope where Dream is perfect and can do no wrong irks me too

What I do like is when neither of them are strictly good or bad. I like when they're flawed. In Dream's case, he has good intentions in wanting to bring his brother back, and he's not necessarily wrong for that, but I can see him having a tendency not to listen

Nightmare KNOWS he isn't the same version of himself he was as a child and he'd try to tell Dream that but he wouldn't listen, he'd try to blame it on the corruption and run himself ragged trying to bring passive back

Dream would do what HE thinks is best for people, again he'd have good intentions but he'd never stop and listen to what others have to say because "he knows best" and I can see this rubbing the Stars the wrong way too

He can grow from it, and I can see him learning. Swap FOR SURE would be able to get through his thick skull eventually, but just because he's the Gaurdian of Positivity doesn't mean he's perfect, but he's not a purposely manipulative mastermind, he's just hard headed and has a savior complex

Nightmare is hard headed too, it definitely runs in the family

I'll admit, i think i have trouble with the way i interpret Nightmare because i know canonically hes fucking awful but since I never read the source material and have no interest to I make up my own shit

Which can tend to paint Nightmare in a kinder light. I have a bias and because of that I think it clouds my way of seeing him, because I like seeing him as caring to the others and having a softer side, but he's still not perfect

Hed still be vengeful, even if the fierce fire for it he had before had dulled. He'd still be a bad guy, he'd take over AUs and he'd still feed off negativity and conflict. I think he'd have too much fun using the "for the balance" excuse

Hed still be manipulative too. If he needs something from someone he'll twist their arm till they surrender it over. I guess my main difference is he's less sadistic and he doesn't hurt the other Bad Sanses?

He can still have a habit of pushing people away too. He and Dream both are TERRIBLE at communicating shit and with Nightmare he closes himself off from the others sometimes without a word

Nightmare can have bad mental health days too. He can't feed off his own negative energy so it effects him like anybody else. This is when he closes himself off, he doesn't try to communicate his issues or his feelings and instead locks his room off and sits with himself. Killer would try to get a word out of him and it'd end up irritating Nightmare. Killer's been around long enough to not be pushed away by it but I can see Nightmare still getting self conscious after the fact

Hes afraid of being alone too, wether he'd ever admit it or not

Also, another thing, he's vengeful, yes, but by the time he's faded he doesn't try to seek out fights with Dream. I think the whole "send the boys after Dream to get him" thing is so silly, he's like a Saturday morning cartoon villain lmao

I can moreso see DREAM seeking HIM out to try and "save" him and Nightmare just wanting to be left alone and only fighting to get him off their backs. Get off his lawn ffs
